Reaper Problems

So I recently downloaded Reaper to try and see if it was what everyone said it was and everything was fine until I tried recording.

When I was start recording the bar goes up to -12dbs but when I press play it's extremely quiet. I've never had this problem before and I don't know how I would fix this in Reaper.

My next issue is that when I record over another track there becomes 2 tracks, usually it records over the last track but in Reaper I get 2 so if anyone knows how to turn it off it would be great.

I also forgot to mention that when I turn on record monitoring there seems to be a delay.

I use a AT2020 and a M-Audio Fast Track if this helps.

Thanks.

Do you mean you are getting a stereo track? That's selectable when you arm the track.

Volume on playback - make sure you have your Fast Track set as the playback device. Monitor delay - that's called latency, and you need to set your buffers so the latency is reduced. There's a whole lot of threads here about that, and in the Reaper manual as well.

What are you playing back through? Are you playing through the M-audio? Have you adjusted the balance between input and playback? Or, within Reaper, have you inadvertently pushed the master channel level down?

The two tracks will be what you have just recorded alongside what you had previously recorded. These are called 'lanes'. In the Options menu item, you are can choose how these are to be treated. However, if you want to get rid of one of the tracks, click on the one you want to keep, then right click and select "crop to active take". A benefit of Reaper (but which can also be a nuisance at times) is that it keeps everything.

Generally you should not need to turn on record monitoring, unless you are playing a VSTi or want to hear an effect as you record. Monitoring through the M-audio is usually better and latency free. Heed what mjbphotos said about latency.

The problem isn't with volume on playback because the when I put other tracks on they're loud and clear.

Also, I don't know if the problem is with stereo or not but if I record say 3 times at the same time it becomes like 3 mini things.

Here's a picture of it.

It like saves the takes but I want to disable that.

You're recording on 1 track - multiple 'takes' - rather than recording onto multiple tracks.
I suggest you sit down and read at least half of the users manual. It's extensive, but well written and informative. I keep a copy on a thumb drive so when I am at my day job and think of something in particular, I can instantly go and review that feature or technique!

Again . . . heed mjbphotos' advice. Set up three (or more) tracks, and record a new take on a separate track.

In the meantime, try CTRL L, which I think causes takes to over-ride each other . . . but I've not used it.

And while you're at it, check your recording levels. I note that the track meter in your pic has peaked into the red.
