drum bus questions

So...you want to make decisions about mic placement through drum isolation headphones while you play???
That's a bit tough.

Just banging on an individual drum and moving the mic around to find the best place for the mic....can you position a mic without hitting a drum?

Either someone ELSE has to listen through the monitors and come adjust mics while YOU play...or it's the other approach that you don't want to hear about. You doing it yourself.

Yeah...it's just me.

Look...the first couple of times it's a PITA...play, stop, listen to track, adjust mics...repeat...etc...
...but once you LEARN what the different positions and different mics do...after that you'll be able to set up mics pretty easy on the first try.
You gotta go through the trail-by-error process to find out what the different moves do in your space with your kit and your playing and your music...etc...you gotta learn for yourself.

Try and error. Yeah...that's the real problem right there.

And I've already got a small room, no treatment, badly tuned drums (until z can fix them up at westfest), and a bad drummer to boot.

I hardly think that a 1/4 inch difference in tom mic placement is slowing me down.

Or you can just not care about source sounds or technique or good playing and do like this offcenter character does and just throw edits and plug-ins and parallel compressors and samples and multi-band compression and side-chaining and whatever else at it and then get really mad on the Internet.

Im not mad. If your band was really good i might be a little mad but nope im pretty good about all this. You should do all kinds of stuff to get the sound you want. There are no rules right? Or does that only apply to people like bloodshit that think because its simple its so natural and got feeling. Your playing punk music! Jesus christ could it be more simple than that? I've got other things to do.

I dunno....I see a lot of folks comment about how they don't have the time or they don't want to waste time...etc.

For me...tracking and trying out stuff, taking time to experiment...that's the most fun. Plus, why are some people in such a hurry or so short on time?
Most of us are working in our own studios, doing our own music...so why the need to fight the clock?

Yes...try a few mic postions...record some passes...listen...then try some other approaches....ENJOY yourself, don't treat it like some burden.

Dude....Greg is just trying to help you out.

You got to work on the basics, which will take care of 90% of your problems when trying to mix....if you record it right, then you don't need a lot of processing. That was the message that was trying to be conveyed.

Greg can be abrasive if you don't know his online personality....and he is blunt and direct, and doesn't care if he insults someone, but he knows his shit about drums and recording in general. He is one of the best examples of showing you the quality of recording that you can get recording at home.

You shouldn't discount his advice because of his online personality.

He is trying to help, but you got really defensive over the basics, and the thread badly veered from your original question about post tracking processing.

Look. I understand what his point was. I already know how to tune a drum set, find the sweet spots, playing good. That was not my question to begin with. Processing in todays music is a big part of music production.

Yep...this conversation definitely got derailed.

There were a few helpful posts on bussing and the fx used.

Anybody got anything else good on the original question, assuming the drums were tracked the best they could be?

Look im sorry that I didnt realize you and greg must be dating. I want to learn new stuff and if you dont want to help dont reply. like the one guy said. I posted this in the right forum and you guys beat the hell out of the record it and play it right thing, which is for the recording technique forum. For one thing a "good recorded" sound is also subjective. You guys should stop trying to beat up the new guys cause they probably already know as much as you do. Like i said. There is more to that dudes drum sounds than he lets on and that is a fact. Even if he dont admit it. But who cares if hes getting the sound he wants. I record and write all kinds of styles of music and i just wanted some new ideas. Dont be mad and lets move on and share some tips. This should be a community for helping, at least thats what i thought.
