Don't waste your money on solid state drives. They are not worth it yet. If the current machine you have works OK for you but you just want a little more muscle than just about anything you would buy will do the trick. Anytime someone says something like "I wanna record my band's demo on a PC. what kinda PC do I need?" you always have a fuck load of people chime in "Well you are gonna need a core i7 with 64GB of ram and 4 SSD drives in a raid config just for your OS and then 8 4TB HDD drives to run two separate 4 disk raids that you can then treat as 2 really big HDD's and run your raids in a raid. And then you need a direct X 11 capable graphics card so you can play fucking Crysis while you photoshop your new band pictures while you encode your first video and master your new album all while running SETI@home."

Fuck all that noise. Just about any cheap desktop will do the trick so long as it has the ports you need. You can always add RAM or more drives later. As far as bloatware goes, just uninstall it all. Would you really pass up a good deal on a pre-built PC just because you can't be arsed to delete some shit?

Yep. The PCIe card pokes out one of those rectangular openings you see on the back of your PC. The last DIY suggestion I gave has two of these slots + a PCI slot for future expansion. Plus it comes with a lightscribe DVD writer so you can print pretty stuff on CD's. lol!
 
So when you bolt all that shit together and turn it on, what happens?
 
It takes you to the BIOS setup screen where you will select your boot drive. You will select the DVD rom and insert Win 7. After that installs you restart, enter the BIOS again and change boot drive to the hard drive you just placed Windows and viola! New computer. Well almost. Then you need to hook up to your internet and update, antivirus, etc.
 
Okay, so what order do you install shit? Anti-virus first? Then internet? I have a modem through comcast. Is that shit plug-and-play?
 
Make sure your Windows Firewall is on. If you are downloading your virus stuff then internet first. Trusted sites are cool without virus protection. If want to be absolutely sure, download the virus programs now on other PC and put em on a flash drive for install previous to going on the net with new PC. Yeah, the modem should be plug n play. Pretty much anything 'typical' is with W7. Then get your updates from MS Update and install Firefox! lol!

I got all my install shit backed up on a harddrive. It's probably full of viruses and computer herpes too.
 
Stupid f*cking computers.

When you get or build a new computer and finally get it set up the way you want and loaded with whatever programs you're going to use like Reaper, VST's or whatever, use this PROGRAM to image your C:/ drive. It will make a snapshot copy of your hard drive that you can always go back to when/if you need to start over. You'll need an external hard drive big enough to hold all the contents, but that's no problem.

So, in the future if you have problems like a virus or corrupted program, you can easily start right back where you know you had a good clean install and everything is set up the way you want it. It's so much better than reloading an OS, reloading all your programs, entering serial numbers, product keys, re-registering etc. If your music projects are saved to another drive (2nd hard drive or external drive) then you haven't lost anything.
 
Yeah I won't lose anything with whatever I decide to do. All my shit is legit and backed up and saved, etc. It's just the hassle of going through the motions....again.

Yeah, that's why I recommend imaging your hard drive once you get it set the way you want. Won't have to go through the hassles of reloadong software again.

Saved me a lot of frustration when I lost a hard drive 2 years ago. Just restored and everything was the way it was when I first built my computer. Nice. Anyways, it's free.
