albums my folks exposed me to at waaaaay too young an age (6 or 7):

incredible string band- the hangmans beautiful daughter
songs of leonard cohen

first records i ever bought with my own money (around 10):

kiss alive ii
devo- freedom of choice
fleetwood mac- tusk (still love it)

first punk rock song i ever heard anywhere (age 12)-

suicidal tendencies "institutionalized" on the dr. demento show (i know they were more a comedy band than a "real" punk rock band)

first punk rock album ever bought with own money (15)-

dead kennedys- bedtime for democracy (they broke up right when i got into them. i'm always late to the party.)

why's everyone talking about the yardbirds?

I don't know about that. They're pretty typical of LA punk. They probably would have beaten you within an inch of your life if you called them a "comedy" band back in the day. :laughings:

eh maybe. i guess i just think of them that way because, when those songs came out, i wasn't hip to college radio or anything like that. so i heard those first songs through Dr Demento and when Weird Al would host MTV and play all the weird videos.
beyond that, i was just never a big fan.

Lots of punk has a twisted sense of humor. A lot of the lyrics are misconstrued because you simply can't understand them or they're told from the unpopular point of view. If you came up on classic rock or hair metal shit, you probably won't ever get it. There's some real dumb punk music out there, but most of it is a lot smarter than it gets credit for. NOFX is freaking brilliant. Awesome tunes, awesome musicianship, and some of the best and wittiest lyrics I've ever heard.

man those guys have really stood the test of time. they were popular with the cool kids when i was in high school and i still meet 20yo kids that are just getting into them. my little sis listened to nothing but Fat Wreck bands for the longest time. again just not my thing. not saying they're not good or anything, because they are, just a little too fun for my brooding white ass. i went in more for bands like Black Flag, DK, Bad Brains, Husker Du, and the Crass.

Greg, i think you'd really like this Boston band from the 90s called Showcase Showdown. real straight-up 77 shit, simple songs, super fun hilarious smart lyrics. if i wasn't at work i'd embed an obnoxious video.

I'll check em out.

NOFX is fantastic. No, they aren't as mean and pissed off as the older punk bands, but damn, they sure are good. They color their anger with wit and high-octane hooks. Love em.

I'm sure in the 70s-80's a lot of people thought the Ramones, Suicidal Tendancies, Dead Kennedys, Bad Religion, Minor Threat, Op Ivy, and all those other great punk bands, were just flash in the pan and wouldn't last the decade. Then in the 90's NOFX and a lot of others came around. What is cool to me is that that stuff is still popular. Punk is classic now.

I have to admit that as I was old enough to get into UK punk as it was happening & therefore find & get into NY punk a little after the event but in time for NY New Wave I didn't have much time for LA/Skate/New Punk.
I got into Husker Du & a couple of others but was too old school snotty to "lower" myself. I think I missed out on a lot of good stuff by being an audio snob!

One thing I do like about Jeff Beck is that awesome roll of duct tape he wears over his upper arm. He's punk as fuck and he doesn't even know it!

Is he related to Keith Richards?
He's starting to transform into him.... :D

Lol @ Keith Richards. I like me some Stones, but that guy barely even plays.

Yeah...but he makes up for it with great rock guitar poses on stage..... ;)

Wow. The voting in this thing is moving along at the same pace as one of our song contests. 49 in 8 years.

I voted for clapton - he was in cream - that is enough.

I've never heard an entire song by jeff beck all the way through. Heard a few minutes of some tunes here and there, but always turned 'em off. He may be more talented than the other two put together, but I really don't like what he chooses to play, so that kind of doesn't matter to me.

That was cute - Keef doing guitar pilates (he probably misread it as guitar pirates).

I love his spray-painted Chucks. Hey Keith, you're a bajillionaire and they make all-black Chucks. Buy some.
