OK I guess it sounds like old 80s rock - or so people keep telling me...

Give it a listen let me know how it sounds

(edit: added bass and raised vocal levels)

OLD MIX:

Kind of like The Ramones. I like the guitar tone but the tune is ALL guitar. Drums and vox are MIA. Drums and bass have to come up. I personally like the vox down in the mix but IMHO, these are way too low. You're off to a good start.

Yeah I am a big Ramones fan - There is no bass track - I will add one and bring the vocals up some - thanks for listening Mike!

Agree with what Track Rat says arcadecko - sounds like early REM covering the Ramones! Enjoyable listen as is, but I'll look forward to hearing version two :)

Ok - version two is posted - added bass and vocal levels

The drums and guitars are slightly out of sync - especially in the beginning. I'm not sure nudging would help if it's a timing issue.
The middle verse is quite pitchy - I'd say the rest are good but I'd redo the middle.
The mix overall is good, thick and well done, so I think you are getting closer to a "finished" sound which you can use over and over to establish your identity.....

I will isolate the guitar and drums and try to figure out the timing sync problem - I am having trouble hearing it in the mix. I totally agree about the middle - I'm gonna redo all the vocals of that part - maybe I will even do it in a different style to give the song a little more variation.

thanks for the comment on getting to a finished sound! thats awesome man, I think it's starting to come together in that regard too. Thanks for listening and commenting.

Thanks for the listen Rob - I like that much better than my wife telling me it sounds like Bon Jovi - I f'ing hate Bon Jovi and I don't think it sounds anything like Bon Freaking Jovi...

REM covering The Ramones - I would go to that show... :)

I think the 2nd mix is still guitar-centric. Sounds like the guitar player mixed this song.
Vocals need to be up front and centered, but not over the top.
There's a lot of low end energy that seems untamed. The kick?? Maybe needs to work better with the bass. Not sure what to suggest that might help.

Cool.

Thanks Chili - I am having some problems with the low end - I use SPAN but it seems pretty level - I think I need to import some similar commercial music mp3's and examine their spectrum analysis for comparison - I listen in my car and the low end is like mud :(

Im still hearing that kick boom, and the snare lacks pop...the guitars sound better so do the vocals

I like the sound you are going for but these early mixes need Greg to comment, he's merciless but he generally spots the early problems quickly

the songs there..the mix isnt

imho i use things like SPAN but after Ive finished mixing just to make sure..i never use it as part of the mixing process...it'll stop you trusting your ears, the biggest improvement i made on mixes is i now have four different systems within arms reach to check the mix on...if it sounds shite on any one..its shite..trust me

Way too heavy on the master compression dude. The mix is ducking all over the place with the kick.

Right out of the gate, there's some serious ducking happening with the kick. Lower the low freqs with the kick, and turn down any compression / leveling FX you've got on it. It's affecting the recording horribly. Vocals and guitars should be reversed. You've got your vocal doubling panned wide, and your guitars more centered. Most recordings do the opposite. The recording, I think, would be better if that were the case. Pan each vocal track about 10% R/L, and your guitars wide. I can't hear the bass at all.

Your vocals are pretty much on-pitch the whole way through. Nice job!

Getting better, dude! Keep it up!

Definitely no Bon Jovi here at all! I like the song and the performances are ok, with a few buts... there are some timing issues here, with the drums first, there were a few beats dropped here and there and the guitar went in and out of time here and there. It sounds like you did this on a four track with one mic for drums, etc. The drums just aren't coming through very well and need some focusing on the kick and snare and cymbals are smooshy, not clear. The guitar tone is a little fake as well. With the drums cleaned up a strong, a realistic guitar tone, tight timing, and more up-front vocals, this tune would really rock. Don't forget most 80's punkers only knew a few chords, but they honed those chords into a perfect rhythmic assault!
:D

Too many lows on the kick, causing your mix to pump. The snare is waaay to compressed. Absolutely no smack on it at all. Pan your vocals more or less down the middle, and then double your rhythm track (as in record it twice, not just copy/paste it) and then pan one take hard L and the other hard R.

The song sounds like it could be pretty good, but man, the performances and mix are an absolute trainwreck. I'd really love to try and help, but I don't even know where to begin. Start all over. :o

The Ramones are my most favorite band ever and I've listened to them for over 25 years, but I'm not hearing it in this one. You people be looney. :D

You need definition in the bass - cut -6 at 100, add 5 at 200 & add 6 at 3000.
The vocals are spread like cold butter on hot bread.
Def. DON'T hear the Johnny Ramone down stroke only in the guitar.
Too much distortion on the guitar too - what did you do to record it - Mic'd amp or DI'd?

Hell yeah, so sould I!

Rest assured it doesn't dound anything like Bon Jovi - I wouldn't have made it past the 30 second mark if it had :)

Thanks everybody - as the saying goes - It's back to the old mixing board.

im gonna start over with dry tracks and see how it pans out :laughings:

Ok I wanted to add the new mix to the first post but the edit option is gone. Here is what I did:

1) increased the stereo spread and reduced the highs on the guitar
2) narrowed the stereo spread on the vocals
3) reduced the overall compression and the drum compression
4) Lowered the guitar volume - brought up the drums and bass
5) removed some of the vocal reverb
6) Tweaked the bass EQ

(The guitar is recorded through a Deltalab DGFX1 then into the Alesis Multimix 16 - its a BC Rich Masterpiece Bich - I could re-record with less distortion - or maybe add another track with minimal distortion to beef it up a little? or go buy a Les Paul :)

I think this sounds better - thanks again everyone - lemme know if it's improving

I like the basic song structure.
The last version seems to be a very low volume?

I'm not very good at describing the mixing aspects.
I'll leave that to the mixing critics.

The song itself is good, IMO.
