Hi Guys,

I am about to throw my recently purchased VF80 from the balcony of my house....... I purchased this unit with no burner in it thinking that finding one would be easy well I was wrong. I finally located one in the US and had it shipped to AU installed it it detects and loads fine, you can play audio disks in it you can format cd-rw's in it but when I try to burn a song from the HDD it just sits there and says Data Saving! and light flashes on the CDRW drive but it just sits there and dose nothing. I have been from front to back through the book and followed all the instructions and nothing seems to work. SO..... I purchased a S/PDIF coax cable thinking ok I will connect it to my PC which has HD Audio with a S/PDIF input and I will record it to my PC with N-Track recording software.... WRONG cant get any noise to come through the PC at all.

The manual states that "You do not have to carry out any special operation for outputting an S/PIDF digital signal from the [S/PDIF DATA OUTPUT] connector, because it is always output here.

I am about to loose my cool and smash this thing to pieces, I have been at this for over 2 weeks now. Can somone please offer me some advice on what to do.

Cheers Viss

Check the software update.. Please let me know what it is...

Hi thanks for the reply, but im not quite sure what you mean ? is there a software update for the VF-80 ? your link takes me to the forum main page im not sure where to go.

Cheers Viss

I had the same problem...

I had the same issue with my VF-160. The internal software shipped didn't recognise the CD unit, and had to be upgraded. Luckily I found a main service centre nearby who upgraded it for free as I had only recently purchased the CD unit.

I cant even locate any firmware for the unit its a joke....

Fostex vf80 updates

Hey Viss,
It may be a little late. It`s likely you need firmware update 2.03 that went with the cd-1 burner. That could be your problem. Normally, once you burn the file to a cd, load it in the cd-1, then turn off power to the vf80, wait 10 seconds, turn power back on, the vf80 will reboot and check for updates, will grab the file from the cd you loaded, will ask you to load yes or no, press yes, let it update and that`s it. With all info being non existant on the vf 80 since everyone has gone to bigger and better things, it suits me fine for part time writing. I`m not ready nor do I have the time to get more gear. more hard disc pc or laptop recording. All that is great but the equipment won`t write or arrange the song, so...
So I had the original wd 200 20gb hard drive. Noisy piece of junk with a high frequency annoying sounf similar to a ground lighting problem. Test from 2004 from Fostex japan stop at 80GB. You may find some used, hard to find new from reputable brands. All this to say I bought a WD HD IDE 160 GB 8mg buffer that the vf80 recognized. It was manufactured in 2011, that`s important. It took almost 24 hours for the vf80 to format and super quiet, just the soft low rumble associated with todays hd. It was $80, not cheap considering the vf80 is not worth a whole lot these days. The only drawback is that the vf 80 programs or songs stop at 99 programs. So a great part of the drive may never get used. There`s probably a way to include more than 1 song per program and get around that way but you would need document that on paper.
If you need the firmware let me know. I haven`t seen on the web and no longer on the fostex japan site, Here is a manuals link

. . . The manual states that "You do not have to carry out any special operation for outputting an S/PIDF digital signal from the [S/PDIF DATA OUTPUT] connector, because it is always output here. . .

I'm not at all sure about the VF80 but on the VF160, digital I/O options have to be set in the menu. Why don't you check the menu and see if there are digital output options available?
