Sometimes, these threads are simultaneously as predictable as punk and government and as unpredictable as avant garde jazz and childbirth.

Nothing at all like a 2"x4" hitting wet cement! ;)

So now you're saying that all songs are built on a 2"x4" hitting wet cement?

maybe if you put everything through this:

You should fire him!
Taking a vacation on such a historic moment.

WOW didn't this go down the drain

So we have covered how the kick is important in a mix, How gregl and miroslav hate each other.

The matter of fact is we are all musicians/engineers/producers here. which involves some degree of creatve protest, no matter how arrogent you are critisism is critisism and it hurts the soul. so stop arguing there is just no point!!

Having read about the relationship between the kick and the bass, I had a mess around and learnt how much difference getting these two in sync makes to the sound. and it appears common opinion that the relationship of these two can make or break a mix. Does it really matter how dominant it is? I think not. look back at all your favorite songs even after listening them 100's of times over you find new things that are so insignificant you never know they are there. however without them, the song wouldnt be as powerful.

I think generally I am in a world of difficulty from recording and playing in the same room means I cannot seem to get the tones I want from the start, getting seriously put of by my serious lack of confidence that I seem to give up a little to easily, as well as maybe having expectations that run far too high then my abilities. From the simple first stage of getting levels right, I seem unable to do it! should I give up as a bad job? or do/have any of you felt the same?

Glen- a while ago you mentioned a "parametric sweep", Is that basically moving across the top and bottom of the frequency spectrum to the extreme to help find the "sweet spot"?

I don't really hate Greg, I feel sorry that he has so much angst toward people who simply don't think like he does.
If I really hated him, I would specifically target him in threads with uncalled for mocks and personal attacks.
That's Greg's shtick...not mine.
Until he starts his attack, I never say anything to him.

Exactly....that's the point I was making before being interrupted by Greg.
The sync between the bass and kick, or the kick/drums and everything else, is about the BEAT.
However, there is no need for the kick/drums to be dominant in order for a song to sound good.

y'all take Greg a bit too seriously and he plays you like a banjo ;)

Ben, we get threads like this once in a while, we have members who like to talk a subject to death and we have members who like to bomb threads with joyful playfulness :laughings:

the rest fall somewhere in between...but yes you are right, many types of music, and I suspect yours, really hinge their success on the rhythm part of the track and that involves the kick and bass relationship the most...and no it doesn't have to be dominant, it just has to sit in the mix properly and generally drive the track

whether you the track suits it up front or pushing from behind its a great place to start mixes from...building each stem around these will give you a good foundation...try it a few times and see if it works...I also find, when I use them, that vocals come third in the mix...because I find it damned hard to get them to sit in there if theyre the last fader going up :)

good thread though..lol

What this thread lacks in substantive content it makes up for in entertainment value.

That's because you're a coward. When I disagree with you, I speak up. When you disagree with me, you run and hide until I've made you look bad enough that you have to come out and save face because the internet is important! :laughings:

Oh nooo, am I going to have to read the whole thread?? :( :(

I guess so... :laughings:  :spank:

And for the record, I don't hate anyone on this board, especially not miroslob. Yeah he's a pompous, passive-aggressive, blowhard, clueless, geezer douchebag, but I still don't hate him. I think he really believes his own bullshit, so in a way I guess you have to respect that. Soft rock on, miroslob! Peace buddy! :drunk:

No need...summary:

OP: I'm looking for some input on how others approach the mixing process

I mix like this...

And I approach it this way...

The kick should be the foundation...

Not so, many other genres...

You suck!

No, you suck!

OP: I'm still looking for some input...

Thaks Heat. So, it looks like this thread is cooling down and getting back on track. No need to run to the cave with it. Cool... Game On.
