So I've been working on this mix since last night: http://www.box.net/shared/3pbc43ysis

I like all of the elements but something sounds off(besides the singing, which I'm hopefully gonna get tonight lol). I'm fairly new to this so I can't put my finger on it. I'd really appreciate any input. Any suggestions?

Something is off, definitely... is the Bass guitar. It's not a nice sound and is too loud... my recommendation is fix the bass, turn off the vocals for now, make a new mixdown and upload it again to help you. After you get a cool music track, add the vocals. Right now they distract and i don't know if the guitars and drums sound good or not.

The Bass needs Eq and compression, right now they have too much mid low frequencies and too low mid high. I always start mixing the drums and the bass by them selfs and then together to see if they are killing frequencies.

Hope this helps.

Vocals are a bit pitchy in some spots. That snare clicky thing is too loud. The vocals could be louder too.

It's the kick drum that makes the bass sound odd. The kick has a low, long lasting impression.

Bass guitar is "in the ball park" of a what a bass sounds like.

I agree with zero00. Pull it all down, start by mixing drums then add your bass and mix that etc etc etc.

Cheers,
FM

I think that click snare thing is still too loud, and the vocals too quiet.

Thanks Squibble. I'll try to turn the snare down more without it being too low. As for the vocals, they're as loud as they're without getting distorted using the mics on a DP-008, the only "mics" I have.

Something is definitely out of tune here. That bass note that pumps at :30 does not belong imo. Maybe you are going for some tension there - It's there! I'm sorry man, there are some tuning/pitch or note choice problems that make it hard to listen much further. If you hear it too and don't know how to fix it, I can listen again and see if I can offer further guidance. ;)

Hey maximus, thanks for the feedback. At :30 the bass note playing is a D. The song is in the key of C and the verse is built from the simple chord progression of C-Dm-Am. The chord playing at the point is Dm and the bass note is D so it shouldn't sound out of tune. All of the background synths are in key as well. I think you might be talking about the B bass note that plays a little before :30, and if so, you are right, I was going for tension. I kinda like it, but I've listened to it about a hundred times in the last day lol. And if it's unlistenable to everyone but me at this point I'd definitely appreciate if you could give it another listen and offer more guidance. :)

Yeah...the rim shot is too loud. I think the acoustic sounds pretty nice. I agree with the others about the bass. It seems a bit off. Could use a little fattening up. The organ thing comes in a bit loud as well. I think it could be good if you fix those things. The mix needs that glue to hold it all together. Mixing is tough, but keep at it:)

Rimshot/snare is way too loud and beat is off or something doesn't fit right. Are you going for a off-beat feel or something other than standard 4:4 time with 2 and 4 being snare hits?

I've been afk for a week, but I wanted to get back to you. Yea, I play that D/B chord in a song of mine called Radio Paradise. It's used in a major key voicing and it sounds great. However, I've never tried playing a FULL Dm chord on the guitar, then adding a B note with a bass. It should work with the roots being a minor third, but the F note of the Dm might note jive with B so well. Bottom line - I'm sure you've either fixed it or ignored it by now. Let me know if you have an updated arrangement to listen to :)

This a nice song, I really like the chorus. Kick is too bouncy for me, it's almost a house music kick. I agree the rim's too loud, and a bit too thin I think. Guitar sounds good, maybe a little reverb? That thing that comes in at 0:52 sends up a couple of red flags. It's off key for one, and I don't think the sound is a good addition. It's as though you thought "it needs another instrument" and then just settled for the first thing you found. Then chorus, really very nice. In the second chorus there's an organ, which is a great addition, but I'd lose the effect on it (chorus?) and I'd give it some more low to mid. Try to create a really warm bed for your guitar and vocals with the organ. Might just be my taste though.

Lol, thanks for the reply. I kinda left it alone at that point but I'll do what you said with the D/B chord, and maybe subtract something and fix the drums, and post it and see what you think.

Thanks so much for your compliment, and advice. Yes the kick is kinda odd for the genre, I was going for a strange feel but maybe it doesn't work. I was thinking about using different drums completely and seeing how it goes. As for the thing that comes in at 0:52, you are absolutely right! haha.. I wanted to add something else, and I was a bit lazy, and that was the first thing that came, lol. I'll take that out. Also I'll try doing the other things you said, and I'll post it up and see if you think it sounds better. Thanks, :)
