Piggybacking an External to 003?

Hello, all! This is my first post on HR, and the beginning of my venture into the recording world.

My question is this: Can you somehow piggy back an external hard drive to the second Firewire port on the back of the Digi 003 for the purpose of using it as the "recording drive?"

I ask because I'm going to start using the 003 with my '06 Macbook Pro (One Firewire port, one internal drive), and I read that it is highly recommended that one not record to the drive on which the OS is installed and running. Not that it absolutely won't work, but that when the OS wants to update its cache, let's say, that there will be glitches in the recorded audio. I would like to avoid this.

So, is it possible to have the 003 send information to LE 8 via Firewire into the computer and also send the tracking audio to an external via its second Firewire hub?

If not, is it feasible to daisy chain computer>external drive>003 and still have reasonably low latency?

Thank you for all input.

Sorry I'm not the internet guru you appear to be. I've been searching and I couldn't find the exact answer I was looking for.

Too bad sourpusses like you have to cruise forums set up as a places of help and assistance.

Still, thank you for the assistance. That's exactly the answer I was looking for.

sorry mate...not been a good day for me.

welcome to the forums, and good luck.

Well I hope everything is alright. If not you've got a forum full of like-minded individuals to talk to.

Thanks again.

yes this can be done. I believe it is in the owners manual as well.

You'll want to connect the hard drive to the macbook pro and the 003 into the HD and your set.

The specific chain wasn't in the manual, but it is buried somewhere in the Avid knowledge base. I also read you can do computer>003>hard drive. But I also read it's far better to go computer>drive>003.

Thanks!

yep you've got it and computer>drive>003 is actually the order that digidesign suggest to do.
