as of a couple days ago, some weird noise keeps popping up in my drum tracks.

kick: http://plunder.com/3745aa649d
snare: http://plunder.com/3c226aa984

sounds like something scratching. or farting into the mic. i ended up recording 3 songs before realizing this was happening.

i'm using the glyn johns setup, and i'm pretty sure it shows up in the OH's as well, but isn't as easy to pick out with everything going on, so it just sounds like clipping (or maybe it is clipping)

i don't think it's an issue with the gain structure - i've been laying down drum tracks on a daily basis for almost 2 weeks now without a problem (up until 2 days ago) and didn't adjust a single knob or fader before this happened.

my chain: cheap nady mics > xenyx mixer > delta 44 > daw

any ideas?

The noise seemed to have a pattern to it. There could be an appliance like a refrigerator causing contamination to your electricity.

Yeah the pattern doesn't seem to follow any part of the beat either. Really weird.

It's really loud compared to the instruments. So if it was something recorded by a mic, it had to be close. It seemed to be louder on the kick than the snare. Is it perhaps a noisy drum throne, and it squeaked as the drummer shifted his/her weight on it? Lame guess.

I think it might be the flux capacitor. Are you sure it's getting a full, clean 1.21 jigawatts?

1.21 JIGAWATTS!!!!!! 1.21 JIGAWATTS!!!!!

It does sound like some sort of electrical interference. Try hooking things up to another outlet, it's strange but that's kinda what it sounds like....

Squeaky drum seat or kick pedal perhaps?

definitely not the throne - mine's a pretty solid wooden stool from home depot or something. dont think it's the pedal either, seeing as how the noise shows up with no relation to when the pedal's being used.

this sounds like the most likely explanation. i realized that the noise didn't show up until after a big storm we had the other night. power went out for a split second and reset my air conditioner - which tweaks out when it gets turned off and back on right away.

i was about to test if shutting the a.c off had any effect, but then my snare head broke. second one in 2 weeks + this retarded noise + breaking sticks every single day = i need a break.

Are you using demo recording software?

Some software only works for so many days as a trial period. After it expires it will add ugly noises to every track while recording to make it unusable. One of mine did that a few years ago by adding loud beeps and squeals every few seconds.

to me, it sounds like it's consistent, but not in relation to what you're playing...

it has it's own tempo, and there's an accent on every 3rd beat!?

weird!!!

When you line up the kick track and the sanre track, does the noise happen at the same times on both tracks?

If it does, it's probably your interface or some electrical stupidity.

I'm not sure but maybe

no smoking or open flames near that drumset!!!

It's a 3 over 4 time signature with an accent on the first beat.

Sounds like you got a metronome in there somehow.

Did you get this figured out?

It sounds like it's a metronome or click track at 70-80 bpm in 3/4 to what sounds like a Guiro (I believe). You know that clicking, winding, sounding percussion instrument?
