So my girlfriend's birthday is coming up and I want to buy her a new mic. My problem is that I have no clue what I'm looking for. The one she has currently is just a cheap computer mic, she says her iPhone records with better quality. I've been looking over reviews and reading about the different types, it seems like a condenser mic would suit her best since she would be recording vocals and acoustic guitar at home, she hasn't done a show in a few years. I've seen several mics that seem good; CAD M179, Studio Projects B1, etc... but my main concern is that she won't be able to use those since as far as I know she doesnt have a mixer or whatever, she just plugs it straight into her computer and records. What hardware not included with most mics is needed to use them? Are there decent mics that can be plugged straight into a computer? Thank you for the assistance, and sorry if this should be in the mic section, but I am most certainly a noob so I figured I'd stay where I belong.

No computer or preamp needed.

:D

There are USB mics that will plug into a computer...
...but what type of singer is she and what level is she going for with her singing...you didn't mention?

Sorry to get silly but I found this and could not resist posting it.

If your neighbours get upset with you banging out your best karaoke singing voice into the early hours. You might consider investing in the silent karaoke Mute-Mic. Which allows you to sing as loud as you like without upsetting the neighbours.

The Mute-Mic does the opposite of a normal microphone and creates a cone of silence around the microphone itself, so all you hear on your headphones is your voice. It connects via USB and his 100% compatible with the Nintendo Wii. Let the good times roll..

Are you sure she wouldn't rather have some nice diamond earrings? :laughings:

Seams like the mic mute would give you a megaphone effect. Much like the old song *Winchester Cathedral*

Zona.... an usb mic is not going to give you sterling results.
You may want to surprise your gal with an upgrade...say like a mic pre interface and a real microphone.
Take a look at a line6 ux1 microphone pre amp for about $100. and a MXL V67g Microphone for about $88.

Well she is going to be doing vocals for her friend's band pretty soon, they're in cali, we're in VA, so the main reason I wanted to get her a mic is so she could do the vocals and get good results. But I wasn't aware that her brother had the full pro level setup and she is going to use his stuff for anything serious she does, so now I'm not sure if I'm going to get her one at all since she might not have much use for it... maybe I'll get her some rare tamagotchis or something (she collects them) I appreciate all the input though, including the joke ones.

Well the tamagotchis is cool but still a microphone that she can call her own when she shows up to gigs would be way cool ...like a Shure beta 87a or a Neumann 105....you know a real head turner, shows she means business.
And you might get more kuttle time out of it.:D

All jokes aside, I actually bought my wife a microphone for her Birthday once, we were performing a lot of live shows and she was tired of being offered beer breath flu ridden beaten up SM58's (or imitations) night after night. I ended up getting her a beta58 which I had engraved with a little message and her name.

I did almost get a beta87, but the 87 needs phantom power and this caused problems at some of the smaller gigs.

Cheers
Alan.

Absolutely, she thought of me every time she sang into it, don't forget to get the engraving done:

"To my most beautiful (name here), sing on forever"

"(name here), Your voice is like the birds, singing to the mountain dew"

Or something.

Cheers
Alan.

Trust me on the earrings...

And witz... "birds singing to the morning dew?"

Ya don't think they'd rather drink it than sing to it...? :D

Good story..

Well Alan, lets hope Zona comes back here before going out to purchase that dam tamagotchis or earrings! I mean a microphone now that's a commitment!!!! More so that an engagement ring wouldn't you agree?
