Grumpy Mod
I thank Commanda for reminding me about this challenge.

Here's the deal:

1 Respond to this thread if you would like to participate . . . anyone can do so.

2 Come up with a set of lyrics on the theme of "misunderstanding" by the end of January.

3 At the end of January, early Feb I will assemble all the lyrics into a single thread and invite the participants (and any others with the inclination) to comment on each other's work.

4 At this point I will figure out a way of assigning each particpant the lyrics from a different participant.

5 During February, each participant will have to create the music for the lyrics they've been assigned, and record this.

6 At the end of February, I hope to hear many of these interpretations of other people's lyrics.

Any questions?

Question.

Could the order be 2-1-3-4-5-6?

Using that order is a bit like hedging your bets, i.e. you will stick your hand up if, during the month, you manage to come up with something that will do. That way you avoid devastating loss of face and self esteem if you say you'll participate initially, then find yourself without inspiration during the month and consequently, nothing to offer.

But . . . that's okay . . . the order can be 2-1-3-4-5-6. I don't really mind.

Using that order is exactly like hedging your bets.
Anything can happen between now and February.
I’d rather not commit to something now and find myself in Israel next week, unable to devote the time to this.
Why do you want a head count now?

Next questions. What if the lyrics I get suck?

How much if any latitude do I have to rewrite something that just doesn't work for me?

After all the theme is "misunderstanding" :)

Bad lyrics abound in pop music and pop culture to the point of cliche'. Lyric sucking is the norm rather than the exception. :o As great musicians we should be able to use instrumentation and arrangement to elevate them. Otherwise, are we really that great after all? Dave aka up-fiddler

Well, I write some terrible lyrics, but plan to join in the fun. Misunderstanding is way beyond what I can write about, but hope to come up with something. With some luck, I can be a part of the challenge. I already have a tune in mind, just need to fill in some words, not an easy job for me.

This sounds interesting. Make it a sticky so I don't forget!

Edit: please :D

Food for thought.

The first thing to pop into my mind for the theme of misunderstanding was the Genesis song called Misunderstanding, you know like and ink blot test.

Then I thought okay I can turn that into Miss Understanding and completely change the meaning of the theme. Reading the text would prolly make sense but just hearing the words might cause some misunderstanding.

Then I went to the idea of homonyms, just get a list of them and cause some real havoc.

Then Alfred Hitchcock came to mind. His movies about mistaken identity might really be fun.

Maybe this helps or maybe it hinders, sorry if the latter, happy if the former puts you on a ladder to success. See, with my country accent I could make that work.

I'm in - with reservations.

I thank Commanda for reminding me about this challenge.

This one looks like a lot of fun!

I am very tempted to participate in the challenge, but time demands in my professional life dictate that I sit this one out.

I hope to participate in the next challenge!

I do look forward to seeing what you guys come up with and listening to your work. You have my support and encouragement, as always!

Best,
Joseph

gecko zzed is there a central point to turn entries into or are you picking the entry songs out of the various threads?

Commanda is right. Apart from my contribution, which is in a thread all by its lonesome, all others have been psoted as responses to this thread.

At the end of January . . . only a couple of days away . . . I will create a separate thread with the entries and reveal who is going to tackle which set of lyrics: write the music and record the song.

Posted to wrong thread!
