Hi, As stated in the title, I can't post in the event electronics forum. I noticed that it wasn't on the list of equipment by brand (or something like that) but I can access the page when I google it. Is it non existent now? or is it for priveledged users only?
Anyway, can anyone tell me what the most appropriate topic would be to post my question? Im having some issues with one of my event Asp8's. Event dont have their own forums (Which they probably should) but google's results sent me in this direction. so needless to say I was a little upset that I couldn't post my question in the event electronics section even after registering, so much so that I wept a little and considered taking my leave from this earth. (not really though).
Any help at all from anybody would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks very much.

Problem with Asp8's, White noise coming from left monitor

I turned on my Asp8's today for the first time in about a month.
After the initial power up I can here a constant low level white noise, which fluxuates in resonance and volume and crackles every now and then also.
When I turned the monitors off again I noticed that Instead of the kind of warm, low pop sound you hear, there was a louder mid frequency pop sound.

I turned the monitors back on again to troubleshoot.
To start, I thought I would play a couple of tracks on my pc and then my CDJ's to see how bad the problem really is. I started by playing a track from my pc with a right pan on the master out of my mixer, to listen to how the right monitor was producing the sound. The usual warm, rich and full sound that I had expected was present, so no problems so far, that is to say until I panned the master out left. The sound that was coming from the left monitor was completely different, it was alot thinner with a strong emphasis on the High mid-High frequencies and the track sounded somewhat punchier.

So to eliminate the possiblity of a sound card issue, I turned off the pc and played some tracks from my cdj's and repeated the process of panning with idenitcal results. To eliminate the possiblity of the mixer creating the white noise I turned it off but the white noise was still audible.

So I started more indepth troubleshooting to try to pinpoint where the problem might be coming from.
I disconnected the XLR's from the mixer and the monitors, yet I could still hear the white noise. I switched the power cables from one monitor to the other with no luck in eliminating the noise.
I have voltage switchers that the power cables connect to as the monitors were bought from the U.S. So I swapped the voltage switcher from the problem free monitor to the noisy one, yet still no improvement.
Now Im thinking that It could be a problem with the wall sockets (Im still in denial here) so I plug the multi adapter out so there is no possiblity of interferance and plug the monitor directly in to the wall socket. You can probably guess how that panned out for me, Thats right, No improvement whatsoever.

My conlusion is probably a fault in the monitor but I can't understand how it could just happen over night. It was working problem free up until now.
The only other thing that I can think of (apart from the monitor itself) is that I had the window open in the room and It is relatively cold outside (about -1). The left monitor would be closest to the opening at about 600mm and the monitor itself was pretty cold. Could this be a contributing factor to my problem?

As you can probably tell I am really desperate to find a fault in something other than the monitor, as having it repaired at this point in time is unfeesable.

If anyone can help shed light on this situation or can advise on what to do next (even if it is sending it out to be repaired) then I would love to hear from you.
Thanks in advance.

Hmm, it wasn't overnight, it was after a month, but that shouldn't make a difference. Is it only one monitor?? You don't specifically say. If so, then your monitor went bad. It happens, and yes, it can happen overnight. sounds like something in the pre-amp stage if you're getting white noise with no signal input.

The cold probably did not cause the problem. It should be fixable by a competent technician.

Good luck,

Thanks for the input.
Yeah It's just one of the monitors. I can hear audio clearly through it. The white noise is only noticeable when the monitor is idle. When I play back tracks I can hear them perfectly fine but after panning from left to right the difference in sound between the two monitors is clearly audible. The affected monitor sounds like theres a Hm- High frequency boost and the overall sound of the audio is punchier then the unaffected monitor.
I double checked the input sensitivity and output settings at the back and they are all in the same position. I thought that maybe the HF trim and the LF trim had been boosted but this wasn't the case.

I just connected the monitors back up to the mixer and when I boost the master signal on the mixer the level of noise is increased significantly higher. There is an increase in noise on the other monitor but no where near the amount that is produced on the "faulty" monitor. Plus the level of noise thats produced on the good monitor when the signal is boosted is still alot lower then that of the faulty monitor when the signal is at my usual playback level.
I just thought I'd share that with you in the hope that it may help in pinpointing the source of this noise on the "faulty" monitor.

you have noise with nothing plugged in? you have a broken monitor

our local Guitar Center was blowing these out last week for $80 each

Holy Shit! And I thought I got a bargain on ebay??? I wonder why they where going so cheap, newer models on the way probably?
And I'd say it's going to cost a lot more than $80 to get it repaired. If I knew exactly what component was causing the problem I'd probably have a go at reparing it myself.
And whats more important, How come you didn't snap them up? You were crazy not to.

They had six of them at that price and I already have great monitors. Besides, the wife woulda flipped if I came home with more "speakers".

Thats fair enough, You gotta keep the wife happy! Still though You probably could have sold them on ebay for a nice tidy profit. I still cant believe they were being sold for that price. I think I paid $1,400 for mine.

What monitors do you have yourself?
