Converting desktop Otari MX5050 MKIII-2 to 'upright' position

Hey folks,

I haven't bothered to pull the thing apart and see what's necessary to do this, but does anybody know what it takes to 'convert' a desktop MX5050 MKIII-2 to an 'upright' position?

Does the thing simply unscrew from its chassis, to be easily screwed into a vertical rack?

Additionally, is there any good reason to keep it in its desktop chassis? I'm trying to save space...

Mine's a console one like this...

They kind of look like they've been assembled from the same components Jeff. I don't know what the actual component differences are if any. Mine's in a roll around rack and tilted back so it'a kind of like the one you've got anyway. I prefer my machines on their back than upright. I find them a lot easier to operate that way, life's a lot easier. So if I had your model, I'd keep it just the way it is.

Because of the way the chassis is mounted into the side panels, to my knowledge it can't be done. I've never seen that configuration changed to vertical.

The good news is I recommend you keep it horizontal anyway. IMO that's always been one of the pros for the Otaris configured that way. When I was looking at 1/2" 8-tracks years ago I almost went with the Otari MX5050 MKII-8 because I liked the horizontal arrangement and the overhead meters.

I went with the Tascam TSR-8 instead for other reasons, but the Otari was a close second.
