I glanced into a bargin bin at my local Wal-Mart...and saw several GHS bass string sets for only a dollar each...I bought ten sets of them and I think I got them all...but the same closeout must be happening all over the place so be sure and check this deal out.

already sold out here
they were the GHS bass boomers

I remember noticing a couple years back that they were selling GHS boomers for 6 string. I think I saw the Zakk Wilde set in particular and thought that no one is going to buy these from Wallmart, and I guess I was right for once.

I bought a crap load of them back when they went on sale:D

Just curious, were they priced competitively, or even cheaper than the norm? I don't play GHS (elixers for me) so I never really payed attention at the time.

Let me know when they sell Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats for a buck. Now THAT would make it worthwhile to go to Wally World.

GHS Bass Boomers sell for for 15 bucks in the music stores so ya the were a good buy.

they are good strings

Are Bass Boomers a good set of strings?? Are they flat or round? Definitely going to Walmart to check it out.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Edit: Oops, just reread Rogue's post. Good strings. I've got the cheapest of cheap basses and don't know what strings are best for it.

Chili, were you able to find em?

Dammit, we just got back from buying fabric at Walmart for my acoustic panels and I forgot to look for the strings. Oh well, we go practically everyday, so I'll check again later.

Thanks for the reminder. :)

Ya they are round wound.
you will be hard pressed to find flat wounds at wally world or even in a music store for that matter:D
Ifn you cant find the GHS boomers at Wal Mart you can get an excellent Deal on Roundwounds here
BTW the GHS bass Boomers are selling for 21 dollars in music stores around here.

Cool man, thanks. So, not knowing to much about basses or bass strings; what' the difference with flat wound and round wound?? A friend once told me to always use flats. But I can't remember why.

round wound strings are the most commonly used strings among bassists.
Round wounds have a round outer winding, are brighter and more responsive but have a zippy zipper sound if you drag your finger over them.

flats have a flat outer winding and sound flatter than rounds but feel very good and no zipper sound when you play, if you don't have the best left hand technique then flats or tape wounds are your best bet or if you have a fretless bass then either tape wound or flats are the best strings to use because round wound strings can wreak havoc on a nice finger board.

most tapewounds are round wound strings with a nylon outer coating on them that sound remarkably good considering they have sound deadning nylon covering them but are really good if you want noise free fretting between notes.
Fender tapewounds are a good low tension noise free string to use and what I usually buy for my fretless bass.

if you like rounds but don't like that zippy sound you can buy ground wounds which are round wounds ground flat which are kind of the middle of the fence between flats and rounds but still don't feel quite as good as flats and are usually a bit more expensive.

I think that pretty much covers it
I am sure someone else can give you a more scientific and technical explanation but this is the best you are gonna get from this ol Georgia boy:D

Nothing more needed, you covered it all. :) Thanks for explaining it for me. It reminded that fret noise was the reason for buying flat wounds. I usually like to roll the top end off when recording the bass, either on the bass tone knob or eq'ing after tracking. Maybe flat wounds would work well for me.

Thanks again, Rogue.
