Basement Studio Build

Make your own. Way cheaper and way more effective.

Problem with making my own is the time needed to make it, the money spent getting all required materials, the knowledge to make it. And the final and most important to me is the look of the room with all the foam in it. Considering I have 3 bands waiting to record their demos, I just want to get it done quick and with as little pain as possible. If I had the time and the knowhow to make my own product, I would, but for me it is just easier to buy expensive foam that gets the job done. Best part about it is all I have to do is click "Buy It Now!" and it will be at my house waiting for me to glue up in a few days.

I am all for ease of use. :P

go to google.com and search for "recording studio foam"

there are companies that meet and beat aurlex for half the cost and the same look!

I have done a bit of looking, but haven't found anything really spectacular. I will deafinately put a few days searching into it when I get to that step though.

Don't sell yourself short. I'm all thumbs and I made my own, and they look pretty nice too.
They are significantly less expensive and more effective than foam of any kind. I built 2 7ft tall 4 inch thick bass traps for the back corners and 5 broadband absorbers(4ft x 2ft) for less than $250.
At least consider building your own bass traps because Auralex bass traps really aren't all that good.

As far as how to build them there are tons of plans and step by step tutorials out there but it basically comes down to wrap some rigid fiberglass in burlap and hang it on the wall.

Added bonus you can make them portable. My bass traps are just hooked on the wall so I can take them with me if I track drums at my brothers house. I can also rearrange them for different situations use them as gobos or whatever.

Edit: If you don't want to make them check here:http://www.realtraps.com/

ALRIGHT!!! It has been weeks, but I have been busy plugging away on the drum room build! I will go home tonight and take some pics.

To update everyone who cares:

I have the 2 Control Room to Drum Room (CR-DR) windows in.

I spent some time mudding the new wall on the CR side

Finished mudding the DR.

Finished sanding the DR.

Primed the DR.

Painted top half of DR walls. (Two colors for the wall split about 3 1/2 feet from floor.)

Taped off DR walls where bottom color will begin.

Installed recessed fisheye trim rings (lights).

First coat of paint on ceiling. (Ran out last night will buy more tonight).

Got the wall plates in and just trying to find the motivation to solder them all and install them in the CR and the DR.

Few new trinkets for the studio:

1x Lava Lamp

2x 48" black lights

1x Three hose hookah

Few new things for the mic locker:

1x Shure Beta 52

2x SM57

And one rack EQ (cheap little guy, but it fits well in a headphone chain)

I forgot to say, "I am going to build the traps based on your "all thumbs" comment."

Thanks for the e-motivation!

SUPER NASTY SET UP. im way to jealous to keep looking at the pictures...... Im not even a rock guy but that set up is mouth watering......... :D

@gethypedmusic: Thanks! It has been quite a project, and I have yet to do any acoustic treatment, but considering everything I went though, to get it where it is, I am pretty happy. :)

@KineticSound: Thanks dude! It is really starting to come along now. I got a price quote on 24 sheets of OC 705: $288 delivered to a company in town. Do you know if that is a good deal or not?

@greyharmonix: I have them on a dimmer switch and it makes a world of difference when trying to play for an extended ammount of time!

@doulos: Thanks, I appreciate all the kind words from everyone!
Getting feedback keeps me motivated, and it helps me convince the wife that I did a decent job - considering how much money I have spent so far! :D
