Hello guys, I have slowly started getting back in doing music. I have been using Reaper without much luck so I can't really do a lot of recording. Checking out FLStudio for it's live recording ability. Might totally switch to it for all guitar stuff also.

For now, I am using the demo version of FLStudio which has no save capability. But it allows to create whole projects and render them to wave. So, I'll just settle for that. Any power or program crash will make the project go away forever. Until that time I can tweak this song. So I have two version. I am not sure which one to go with.

This is a trance track. Any suggestions in general on the song/mix/composition or recommendations on A or B are appreciated.

I feel this piece is missing a real driving melody. If you listen to all the big trance hits, they all have a theme or melody that they are working to. I feel your song is somewhere between electronic and trance. Its aiming for the big "phat" sound of the trance song, but tries to take you on a little journey with lots of little phrases and licks.

I would try and centre it around a more common melody/riff that you can come back to and drop breaks into. I feel its just a bit repetitive (well, its trance isnt it :D). I do really love trance music though so that not just my opinion on this style generally ;)

Good things I have to say about it are the synth sounds. If you made them yourself then they are nice, certainly occupy the right sonic space in the track. Just needs a little bit of restructuring in my opinion.

Keep at it. It will get there.

G'day BB,
The intro to A took me back to the Bronski Beat & Yahzoo. All thaht's missing is an ever so slightly flat vocal ripping away at a great melody.
Good work so far.

Waffleness - Thanks for your comments. And thanks for taking the time to listen to this track.

You have many good points. I have to now make sure to try to incorporate those. Basically, I was messing around with my guitar using the death metal pedal and thought to get the bassline rendered to wav using flstudio so I wouldn't forget it. Then just kept messing with it and put a whole track around it.

Yeah some of that phat sound of trance is good the way Tiesto does. Although he goes in many different directions.

I don't know if you heard version A or B. The B has the "theme" of the piece a little more visible. Basically that's what I was trying to bring as the main theme. That part is repeated.

The song is very repetitive 'coz it's sort of a house/trance same progression thing with just the 4 measures (5 chords). It became a little electro-pop/trance eventually. I never stick to what I envison starting out, LOL.

Ray - How you doing, man? Thanks for dropping by, listening, commenting. :)

Overall, tho, you vote A or B? Any other recommendations, nits, peeves with the track?

Wow, nicely arranged and recorded!
Not really the kind of music I listen to but really well made. You'd be a hit in Malta, the kids there just love this music. Plenty of beach parties there....:D

Cheers

Hey, thank for listening and commenting man. :) Yeah I grew up in good Europop and Euro-trance influence as well as Maiden and GnR and and even pop rock like Bon Jovi. The lines are blurred after a while as to what I wanna play as musician. :)

I'm glad you like it. :) The beach parties.... well let's just say I wouldn't say not to a nice steak dinner and some red wine at a beach-side restaurant after a long day of running around the beach. Darn, now I'm hungry.

:)

Hey Big Bubba....cool trance music going on. I don't listen to this type of music so I've no reference. The onlt thoughts that came to mind were
1) I like both - each have some special parts
2) The bass seems loud to me but again I have no point of reference so I'm probably way off...haha The other synth parts could be louder in spots for me - that's why the bass seemed loud to me.
3) The mix is super clean and clear and it could blow a few speakers as you could turn it way up without distortion.
4) Another couple of examples of BB's keyboard wizardry.
5) Welcome back I've always enjoyed your recordings.
6) Try Sonar it's pretty cool...

:cool::D:cool::D

I listened to the B track and like it. Mix sounds good. I don't know enough about the genre to comment on arrangement, but it sounds like a good dance song. I can see this going on for 10 minutes in pitch black darkness with what's-her-name. Oh the memories....

Peace,

I don't listen to much trance my self. In terms of synths I prefer the harder distorted type rather than that false string sound that seems to be prevalant in trance, which is why I preferred the A mix to the B, as it seems to have more of those kind of sounds. Mix seemed well balanced on these speakers. What kind of probs are you having with reaper? I find it supremely stable. Another thing to look out for is Cakewalk's Project 5 if you like the loop based stuff

A, methinks I like A, A, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a.
then again B was pretty...
No, A!

ido1957 - Thanks for listening and commenting. :) Yeah I kinda liked B a little better 'coz I spent time composing that little pattern and you can't hear it in A much. Hmmm, ok on the bass part. I might reduce it a little. Some of those trance basses are louder than anything. And some are very low. Clean mix is bad or good in this case? I always think they sound a little too sterile which kinda goes a little toward pop music.

And really it's not keyboard wizardry. You throw on a bunch of plugin effects, and delays and the whole electronic industry is born. It's the same patterns some times in many techno songs but how the delay or phase is done can make a difference.

Chili - Thanks for listening and commenting. :) You're thinking right along the lines of liking B, huh? I also preferred B.

Bulls Hit - The only diff between A and B is the synth you hear between 0:07 - 0:33 in B. It's a little sweet. Not hard'ish. I might replace it. Also I put B on top and A on bottom 'coz seemed like people were just listening to A and well.... power of suggestion.

rayc - A? Hmmm you no likey the opening synth in B? Too sweet? Too pop? Or just the subtleness of A you like?

Thanks all for your comments. I appreicate your time.

Bass - Again I'm no connoisseur so I leave it to you to decide. ;)
Clean - Is always good. meaning also open/dynamic/well separated/no overloads/clipping even at max volume settings.... :D

Well, I just lowered the bass by 5db in both and reposted them. It's not very tell-able (that a word?), but I was afraid to lower it too much.

Listening now to B... Sounds like the bass is now more part of the mix than before. The other instruments now seem to have a more prominent role in the soundscape. But just need to add, overall the mix is balanced and the bass is still a key player. For me this is better....

Thanks man. :) I have just lowered the HH's also by 4 dbs. And lowered the into synth a little. Just being over critical 'coz once I close the project that's it. It can't be saved since this is a demo version. It can't be redone. 'Coz recreating a trance piece after layers of FX is like finding a needle in the proverbial haystack.

All, since some have liked A and some B. I will keep both. I have applied bass and HH changes to both and will just keep both. :)
