Hey, my band Sister Ray used a Tascam 388 to record our album:). We mixed and mastered on the computer. Check out some of the songs on our myspace. I can not post links yet but search Sister Ray from Salem OR on myspace

Let me hear your feedback or your questions.

I'll definitely check it out when I get home later today.

Long live the 388!

Hello,

Sounds Great to me!

Apart from the 388, can you tell me a bit more about gear you used (mics, outboard effects and pres if any?).
What about mics position?
Did you use DBX?
Congratulations.

cheers

yeah sounds good congrats.

i have some production questions as well:)

are the drums just recorded to two track? how are the miced?

what type of reverb do you use, it sounds very good and i dont even like reverb,

are the vocals recorded to two seperate tracks on the 388 or do you use some kind of pro tools technique to get the double tracked effect?

thanks!

The vocals sound pretty obviously like two separate takes to me. It's a good double for sure, but there are plenty of spots you can hear phrases end differently.

IMHO, the constantly double vocals get a little fatiguing after a while, but they're great as an effect now and then. I know the Beatles did it a lot, but for some reason it doesn't grate as much. ???? I enjoyed hearing that you didn't do it on every song.

Some cool sounds for sure JDMiller. Nice job!

Gear and stuff

I had a decent amount of mic's to work with. For guitars I almost always used a 57 on the cab and then just went through the different mics I had to see what would work best for a room mic. Vocals I used only the MXL V67g.

We experimented alot with natural delay because our room was nearly 400 feet long.

Drums were recorded with mics on the 2 overheads, snare, and bass drum. I just plugged them into a peavey 4 channel mixer then into a RNC compressor then into the 388.

The RNC compressor is a great tool. If you haven't checked one out its worth a try.

For reverb we used our fender Reverb amps and for everything else we used Electro Harmonix holy and holier grail pedals.

For the most part we stuck to getting good sounds, there was absolutely no eq done other than minor mastering stuff. Mixing was just a little tweaking of levels and fade outs.

While recording I used this site quite a bit to learn about the machine and recording techniques.

Thanks a lot. This Saturday I'm recording my first analog session with a TSR-8, which hopefully will sound like that.
I like a lot that room sound, it's like an old echo chamber.
Regarding drums, did you get that sound recording the mixed drums to mono (just one track of the 388)?

I'm checking the RNC. Actually I don't have any compressors apart from the sofware ones.

Sounds sweet man, raw. good stuff. cool music on top of it all.

I recorded my last album on the tascam 388 as well. Just feel a little bit like a cheater cause I mixed on the computer, I dont really have enough outboard gear for processing.

The albums called "The Electric Foodgun".

"Electric Foodgun"...

I must say I just had a listen and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

I like Campfires and Battlefields" and "Edmonton" the best. Yer drummer's got a little Mitch Mitchell thing goin' on in Edmonton...Guitar/drum duos are highly underrated and uncommon. You two do a really nice job of capitalizing on the format. I used to do some live improvised stuff with a guitarist friend of mine in college. It was really uncomfortable in the beginning being so musically exposed but it was a good stretch.

JDMiller1988, I also enjoyed your band's work. Lots of tasty textures. Nice job using the space like you did. You can hear it.

Hey thanks a lot sweetbeats. I know exactly where youre coming from with the exposed feeling with the music. Even more than say a drum and bass. I could never dream of improvising the stuff that i play. It takes noodling around the fretboard until something sounds right. I have no theory behind it.

JDmiller, not trying to hijack the thread! Hope you don't mind. Before I had the 388 I always scavenged for albums recorded on the 388, it fascinated me for reasons I'm not sure of. I love the sound you get out of yours. It's got this raw feel that I love(and don't think I've gotten).

However, it is the "cherry city" in the "beaver state." :p

Sounds good, dude. The 388 is an effective machine for you guys.

Hey JD I think you guys are great! I am possibly getting a Tascam 388 soon, and I am excited to start recording!

superbeatballer, I never made the cherry and beaver connection... well i have but not like you said

Other Bands that have used a 388 are The Black Keys (why i bought one) and east river pipe. Anyone know of any others?

I just did some more recording this last weekend and was reminded how easy the 388 is to use and how warm and thick it sounds.

We should make some kind of 388 recording archive. Anyone Down for a project like that? I could make up a quick website probably, host everything from archive.org???

Kelley Stoltz is another 388 user. Great stuff.
