Yeah it's our way of saying 'period'. Haha I can't imagine how Brits and you American fellas used to communicate prior to the internet age , if I'm still getting "wtf?" lines![]()
Oh god, don't get me started on Aussies!
I'm friends with this amazing girl from Perth and one day she was like "OMG I have to send you pics of me in my new thong!!!"
I was likeyesyesyesYES!!! getting all excited and all
...only to receive a pic of her damn slippers![]()
One thing...no, two things that I have learned.
The first...If you can't hum it, it's a waste of a track.
The second...Chicks Don't Care how fast you can play.
chazba
I've never met a (straight) girl who doesn't immediately think why a guy who can move his fingers REALLY quickly and delicately might be nice to know.![]()
That's just it--we didn't communicate much before the 'net.
Though I have a Brit friend who spent most of his life in Australia, and now sounds an awful lot like Crocodile Dundee. Whenever we're together--only once a year or so--we're always trying to trick him into saying lines from the Croc Dundee movies. Like "Hey Bill, could you hand me that knife?" then point to a fork in the hopes he'll say "That's not a knife..."
(This long ramble will only make sense to those who are old/tasteless enough to have seen the referenced movies.)
Chicks Don't Care how fast you can play.
True
Oh god, don't get me started on Aussies!
I had an Aussie lead singer. When I met him he was passed out under a piano in our chapel after drinking all night. He did a great Elvis, Chicks loved him.
Doesn't get chicks though.i can play my guitar with my tongue... dirty licks.![]()
Chicks love guitarists particularly when they use false right hand harmonics. To make solos shred, instead of trying to play so fast the notes blur together just finger 0NE note, bending it with vibrato. Repeatedly pick down strokes while partially muting the string with the right thumb. Move the mute point so you can hear the harmonic shift. Listen to 'Unglued' on Stone Temple Pilots 'Purple' (the second album, 12 gracious melodies) Dean DeLeo does a nice demonstration at the end of the last verse entering the final chorus. You can have your right hand finger tapping, Chicks just don't dig it, guys do (sorry I'm in it for the chicks, and they don't care how old you are either). If you aren't familiar with false right hand harmonics and the connection with getting chicks I could put on a motivational seminar on the topic.

One method of many. A number of friends of mine who DON'T play guitar have had great success picking up chicks for being a guitarist after I showed them how to play the first three notes of Clapton's "Tears in Heaven." Done right, if anyone in the room recognizes the song, you'll get interupted at that point by an "Oh, you play guitar??!!" and if you play your cards right and gradually steer the conversation towards other areas, you're in. If no one recognizes it, well, at least you haven't embarrassed yourself.![]()

The Rev Willy G (Billy Gibbons) is a master of this sort of thing. He can make a note count. My favorite guitarist.
Almost all of us started playing music to get the chicks. Of those, nearly all have found that it doesn't work nearly as well as we hoped it would.
Back to the topic... For some great solo work that doesn't involve crazy speed licks, listen to Dave Mason's "Alone Together" album.
I know this is almost blasphemy, and I like ZZ top and Billy's gritty sound and way of playing and their records, and ... and... ....
BUT recently I started thinking that a lot of their live stuff sounds a bit repetitive and "non-fluent" - kind of like "we haven't played for a while". I really thought "wow, the same lack of flow as myself"
or maybe I'm just over-sensitive.![]()
