I am about to record bass on a few new songs. I use a Line 6 Toneport UX2 and Reaper to record. I can either use the Gearbox plugin on the bass settings to record, like I have been doing, or use my Ampeg CL preamp and run into that first. Which one of these methods would have better results? Thanks!

Try them both. Then trust your ears to tell you which one is the better track.

Yep, do both, compare & contrast the decide - or blend - oohhh double tracked bass - could be very cool.

Well, I generally go for a mix of the DI'd signal and a mic on the amp..
We could also point to that article in one of the recording mags that talks about DI, mic on the amp, and the musician and his instrument in an iso booth with a mic on the strings of the bass....

Now that is getting a bit carried away. But the AE who was talking about it (and don't ask me to name names! I can't even recall what I had for breakfast this morning! ) was renouned for his bass tracks.

Maybe. But in this case, it's 2 DI'd tracks, one going through a processor and the other a preamp. Might be too 'in-your-face'.
