My Corporate Ladder Turned Out to be a Stepstool
© J. Blessing 2007

I was sittin’ at work just doin’ my thing
When suddenly I heard my telephone ring
It was my supervisor delivering the news
It seems it was time for my annual reviews
After working hard all year I had the silly notion
That I deserved the upcoming promotion
The boss just shook his head as he told me “No”
Apparently I’d gone just as far as I could go

<CHS>
With no paid vacation, medical or dental
This whole situation is driving me mental
My job description’s the same it was in high school,
‘Cuz my corporate ladder turned out to be a stepstool.

I decided to find a new line of work
Hopefully some place where the boss ain’t a jerk
A few months later I found me a job
Working in construction with some other poor slob
I started doing well, and learned some new tricks
Figured out a faster way to lay them bricks
My idea got stolen by my boss’s son,
He got the promotion and I had to run.

<CHS>
With no paid vacation, medical or dental
This whole situation is driving me mental
I shoulda known better, I feel like such a darn fool
‘Cuz my corporate ladder turned out to be a stepstool.

A couple weeks later I turned in an application
But the hiring manager, he was on vacation
While everyone else thought it was quite funny
I sat around running out of money
I wound up with the job but that wasn’t any shock
I know that they would’a hired anybody who could talk
‘Cuz instead of working where I’d wear suits and ties
I’m taking orders that involve drinks and fries

<CHS>
With no paid vacation, medical or dental
This whole situation is driving me mental
My job description’s the same it was in high school,
‘Cuz my corporate ladder turned out to be a stepstool.

Don't worry about blasting this to bits...it was written out of pure amusement...not like its my life work or highly personal to me. It's meant to be a 'cute' C&W song. :)

I have no desire to critique this - while there are some lines/phrases that could use work, I enjoyed this clever story so much that I would not feel right poking holes.

I could certainly see this being a great novelty song in a country genre (someone like Junior Brown has made a living off of songs like this). Unfortunately only one in a thousand novelty songs actually draw real interest.

Hit vs. $hit - on a commercail basis, who knows - it's clever, funny and there would be thousands of people who could relate. All I can say is, I liked the lyrics - and I'm not easily impressed!!!!

heheheh, this song came from my own quirky sense of humor...I made the up the pun one day and thought "That could be a county song." The chorus came next, then had to come up with a few verses to go along. In the second verse, though it's hard to tell, the "other poor slob" turned out to be the bosses son mentioned later. The third verse is based off of my one attempt to get a second job...the manager was on vacation that whole week. When he came back, I didn't get a call because I make too much money in my primary job. I thought it funny in a frustratingly getting broker kind of way. lol. Can't work at fast food because they didn't want to match my primary income...how dumb did they think I was? I knew full well they wouldn't match it. Couldn't win for losing.

:D

it's funny. you could sell it to weird al if he's still around :)
