Well im starting my home studio and i wanted to know what other Rack gear i should include. I have a presonus firepod with a presonus Comp16 but im thinking of selling it to i can get an Alesis 3630 Compressor. What other gear you guys suggest?? Would a BBE 362 Sonic Maximizer be a good choice??

Im into metal/ thrash metal so i would want to get the most out of my recording quality, i mean i don't expect pro results but DECENT quality.

Tell me suggestions.

Thanks!

dont expect ANY gear of the caliber of the 3630 to do anything more than damage the audio on the way in. Get in, run some good plugs and you will be way better off than destroying it on the front end

I know how many people seem to hate the "it depends" answer but...it depends

One of the pitfalls of people getting into this (especially people just out of recording schools where they have been direct-marketed at for a year or so by advertisers paying a nice price to the schools to sell students to them) is that they thing that "this track needs THIS piece of gear" without hearing the track even.

What are you trying to do?

Ask yourself these questions, once you have safely, and smartly recorded tracks in front of you, playing in a loop on whatever recorder you use.

1. What is this particular track doing, and how does it interact with the other tracks?

2.In what places does it compete for space with other tracks?

3. In what way does it help other tracks

4. In which places is it hurting or helping the rhythm and timing of other tracks

5. Is the sound right for the song?

6. Is the performance right for the song?

7. Is the part written right for the song?

8. After examining ALL of the above thoroughly and being able to answer them specifically, and ONLY then, do you say "what would I LIKE to do to this track so that it deals effectively with numbers 1-7?"

9. THEN ask yourself "what tool would accomplish this goal?"

Answer 1-8 and Ill give you an example of a plugin, but Im betting by the time you get there you will have an answer for yourself

Cough...cough... troll... cough...

Come on... 3630 and a BBE in the same paragraph...

Yeeeup... I was thinking the same thing... The only thing missing is a Berry Composer Pro... I noticed that the "r" in "rack" was capitalized also.

i dont get it??? what you guys saying?

More like "what they're not saying." Here's what I'm saying ....... the compressor(s) you mentioned are not good IMO. You can spend a good chunk of troll change on a nice compressor. At the price point of the compressor you mentioned I'd highly suggest you look at FMR's RNC (Really Nice Compressor). It's umm ..... really nice and costs $175. There's many times I go to it instead of the 1176LN in my Rack. Really!

(I tried to put the link for the RNC here for you but I have to complete 5 posts on this forum before I can put up links).<One done, four to go ...... I can hardly wait>. <Need to find a really cool avatar too>.

I'd be glad to suggest what to put in your Rack, I'm sure others would too. It might help quell my Gear Acquisition Syndrome.... at least virtually. I could be the 'Interior Designer' so to speak or your Rack. I need more information first before I can suggest specific items. You do metal/ thrash metal, ok. What's your budget? How many sources will need you track simultaneously? Will you be using mics? Direct Box? What gear besides your Firewire interface do you have? What DAW(s) are you using? Do you have near reference monitors?

Usually the first essential to go in a Rack is a preamp. Preamps and channel strips give me a woody! You should start getting excited about them too. For now (and for all eternity) forget the BBE Sonic Maxipadizer. Search your soul and get back to me. Not bad for my first post here eh? So how do you like me now?

hehehe......I still think you're Funny.
I have to admit i still don't Know what a troll is....

Rack

Noone who would even consider a 3630 should be putting anything other than mic pres in their rack. Doesnt matter if I sent him MY rack, the stuff would just get messed up. Better to learn the stuff first, and better than that, be able to say why something needed to be done which would then suggest the how, it needed to be done.

Buy cheap, buy twice.

It's not just a cute slogan. You are about to waste some money.

Pipeline,
Maybe you oughta Pipedown and give the guy some slack. Everyone is a newbie at some point (usually at the beginning). Yeah he seems a little ..... I dunno? But he's also enthusiastic. What's the purpose of a user forum? I've read some of your posts - you are articulate, intelligent and appear to have some experience. Why not use these attributes and help him ..... or not?

Now tell me, you've never bought POS gear? I know I have. Like the those three UAD-1's in my rig (great plug-ins, crappy drivers/compatibility). BTW, they're working the best they ever have at the current moment, I'm not changing a thing.
