Are you using pc recording software?

I haven't seen a rack unit that does all that. I know furman makes some pretty slick headphone stuff. I would check them. I use an OZ distibution amp but it have the matrix capabiltiy. But you can run 4 isolated headphone mixes or four using the same mix. I use my daw interface control panel for personal monitor mixing . If you have the I/O, I would advise goint that route. It might save you some cash.

I've got the *gasp* Behringer headphone amp.

Works pretty good for me, I have the I/O from the Daw to run seperate mixes and also I/O from my board to run seperate tracking mixes. Whichever the situation calls for.

I've got it sitting on one of these:

A little velcro and a little cable to hold it down and you're good. Once you pile stuff on top of it and around it it's not as ghetto lol.

I just bought that thing from zzounds. Arrived defective, i had everything dimed and somehow the volume was lower than the volume coming off my daw. strange...

typical behringer :(

I've used these for 3 1/2 years on my regular gig. They have been fairly relliable in a harsh environment, so I would expect better in a good environment. A few of the mixers have been replaced. The environment is very dusty and has large temperature and humidity swings.

Main mixer gets 8 channels (6 mono that can be ganged as 3 stereo, and 1 stereo) and sends to (I think up to 8 with a single unit) personal mixers via cat5. And with surprising fidelity. Head and the mixers are separated by somewhere between 100 and 200 feet of cat 5.

Head is rack mounted, mixers sit on mic stands

still no idea for rack ideas.

Reason being is I need it for live application actually. So I can take it to any venue and just plug in headphones and I'm good to go.

the hearback system is too many components.. i need one deal.

Why so many monitor outputs for a live gig? In ear monitor systems?

yes. we play with loops and stuff live. so everyone needs an in ear click as some need loops. and since we have ear buds in our ears for that, the vocalist have issues hearing wedges so we also run mics into ears. it's been ok but all us have only been using one mix and something like this might help out.

well, I dont know how many inputs/outputs you are needing, but the Behringer HA8000 has 10 inputs, thats 2 mains and 8 directs.
And 16 headphone outputs. Also stereo, or mono on the outputs.
you can have either of the two main inputs feed any or all of the 16 outputs, or there are 8 direct outputs that each feed two headphones.
Its a really versitle unit, I have been using it for about three years now, and never a hicup.

PreSonus HP60 has a adjustable blend of two mix inputs and a single ext source for each of 6 headphone outputs. Not quite as flexible as the Mackie, but might be enough for what you're doing. I use the simpler HP4 and am quite happy with it.

both units, + all of the rackmountable units I've seen are only two inputs (main input and a direct input per channel). I'd like something that has 4 inputs and be able to mix those to at least 3 different headphones.
The mackie seems to be right at what I need, I just wish it was in rackmount form.

I dont know what kind of mains board you are using, but if it has enough aux channels, you could do your sub mixes there, and patch them out to the headphone amp.
Also, the Behringer has 2 main inputs + directs on each channel.

I use this for my studio:

Actually, mine is one model before. It has worked great for me. It has 4 channels with 3 outputs each, a direct in for each channel, and bass/treble for each channel. The only downside is there is one volume for each of the 3 outputs per channel. If you need more there is also this:

Not quite as many bells and whistles, but 8 independent channels.

You may still be able to use the Mackie. With a little bit of extra work you can probably fit the Mackie in two or three rack spaces by getting a sliding rack mountable shelf. you could screw the mackie down to the shelf to keep it in place. I have seen people do stuff like this for graphic EQ remotes like the DBX Driverack remote.

thanks xstatic - I think that might be the best idea for my needs. Didn't even think about that

I use the $19.95 model... works great!

I have the Samson Q5. 5 channels of headphones with independant volume knobs for each channel and a master knob for all channels. Monitor passes through unaltered. Mono button for headphones only, iirc. Got it used off of craigslist $30. Feet removed and double sided tape on the bottom because the guy had it rack mounted. It gets a little warm though.

I have the Presonus HP4. 4 channels of headphones with independant volume knobs. The main volume knob affects the monitors only. Mute button to mute monitors only. Mono button affects all channels, including monitors. $99 +/- $5 (shipping) at WWBW. Although I got the Q5 because WWBW couldn't button down a definitive ETA. Was 3 weeks, turned into 6 months, but after much nagging arrived in 3 weeks. About the same height as my DMP3. Not as wide, but a bit deeper. Doesn't seem to get hot. Two birds with one stone in that it's a headphone preamp and a monitor volume knob. At this point, it's the only new piece of equipment that I have that wasn't bought off of craigslist.

I have the Behringer HA4700 and it works great.4 channels, each with an aux input and three outs per channel.I know Behringer has a bad rep but if you do a search on it you'll find this particular item to have mostly good reviews.

It seems to me like most people here are not really reading the actual question. Most suggestions here are for the standard cheap studio headphone amps which from what I can tell do not address the actual question. The mackie in question here allows for multiple inputs AND multiple outputs. Most of the amps here only utilize a stereop input and maybe an auxiliary input. The Mackie headphone amp allows a custom blend of multiple inputs across all of the output channels. Basically like a little monitor mixer with multiple headphone outputs. The HEAR tech stuff will do this as well as the AVIOM system, but is not all rackmountable and is expensive (comparitively). The only other system I can think of in a lower price range is the OZ audio and the Fuhrman system, but the Fuhrman requires external boxes on multiple CAT5 cables.

Anyone know of something that is similar to this in rack form?
http://www.mackie.com/products/hmx56/

I think this is similar to the Mackie in that it has flexible routing capabilities, has per channel volume/tone/pan/aux inputs/mono-stereo -basically working as a mixer. I'm not a Behringer fan but this unit works great for me. You can insert auxilary feeds into each channel and blend between the auxilary input and the cue input so each musician can hear "more of me". The Mackie is $150/6 channels, The Behringer is $110/4 channels but Zzounds has some B-Stock models for $90. I'm guessing the Mackie is of better sound quality.
