Advice on monitors

I am new to recording, and use stereo speakers as my monitors. My question is why use near field monitors and what is the best buy passive or active monitors. I own a dp01fx if that helps. Thanks.

I'll bite. I'm NOT an expert on this but most "stereo speakers" and "home stereo receivers" are designed or tend to hype the sound. They do not give a very accurate image of the sound being recorded. (Most) nearfields are designed for accurate reproduction. As far as the best buy....there's 80 bizillion threads about that right here all over this BBS. Thing is, look at your budget and go do the foot/ear work yourself. In our studio we have Yamaha NS10's powered by an ART amp, M-Audio BX5a's, and some self-built soffits loaded with Pinnacle drivers. None of this stuff is high end whatsoever but I've grown comfortable with it and it works pretty good for me. Someone else here would walk in and walk out plugging their ears.
So you have to check them out yourself. Bring along your iPod with stuff you're used to hearing. Drop the iPods EQ setting to flat and try out some monitors. Pick the best sounding for your budget. Hope this helps.

we use monitors to get a translation of our mix. That helps out mix sound good and even on all speakers. do more research before you buy.

keep in mind what car you love to drive(i.e. your monitors) is pure opinion.....some say ford some say chevy.......so go try them out at a store if you get a chance.
