Hey Guys, I recently bought a Sansui MR-6 dirt cheap for sketching ideas so my Tascam 238 will last my lifetime:eek: :). It works great and looks hardly used. I was wondering if anyone had a manual for it. It's pretty easy to figure out how it works even without a manual (as I pretty much have), but I do have one question to anyone out there who has owned one of these back in the day. Does anyone know how the (6) tracks are set up in terms of L and R sequence? Meaning, is track 1 left, track 2 right, trk 3 left, trk 4 right.... and so on? I just wanted to know for panning so I can get the strongest signal to the correct track with little or no bleedthrough.
Thanks and Cheers,

A.A.

Don't know a source for the manual, but Yes, odd numbered tracks LEFT and Even numbered tracks RIGHT by convention, but you could assign them the other way ‘round if you want. It’s just a standard and won’t impact crosstalk for better or worse.

I am not sure what the issue here. Maybe I am totally off the mark? :o
My guess, if the crosstalk is concidered to be an issue and the objective is "L/R image" , then maybe there is some sense in planing ahead (if it is possible to begin with), and recording tracks that you "plan" to pan hard(er) left or right to physically more separated tracks, and record the tracks that you plan to pan center to inner tracks. Of course you'd need to know which trach is which in your machine. Do I make sense? probably not :o heh heh :D
I'll attach the picture:

So if I leave the pan knob straight up the middle, it makes no difference?

First thing, check my first post again... I wrote it the wrong way (left & right) the first time so I corrected it. (Let’s see... 12 hours ago I was eating dark chocolate candy kisses and drinking Coca-Cola... must be what happened.) :)

The MR-6 is one of the 6-tracks without the mixer, so it depends on how you're using whatever mixer you have.

If recording with direct outs the PAN doesn't matter (or shouldn’t if the mixer is designed right), but if the channel is assigned to a buss that connects to the input of the recorder then odd channels and busses correspond to left and even channels and busses, right… but I’m not really sure what you’re trying to do.

If you’re recording two tracks at a time like 1 & 2 and you want the two sources isolated from each other then yes hard panning each channel left and right is how to do it. If you record with the Pan control at any other point the sources will bleed over… unless your mixer has separate buss assign buttons for 1, 2, 3 and 4 or how ever many busses you have. In that case the Pan control won’t cause bleed over to the other track but will attenuate the signal on that channel if not hard panned. But again it depends on your mixer. Some consoles will bypass the Pan control if only one buss is selected, so it’s the same as using direct out.

It’s no different than your 238 except you’re working with 6 tracks instead of 8. However you were working with the 238 is how to work with the MR-6.
