suggest a decent but inexpensive PA for band practice

yeah carvin has some very nice pa stuff for pretty cheap compared to other brands. You could get one of their 350 watt, 15" powered speakers for like 400 bucks new. Hook up a cheapy mixer to it and there it is. I know it's a little bit more than what you were talking about spending, but if you can it would be worth it.

yeah I think I'm gonna go with one of those Carvin speakers (or two if I can aford it, we'll see) and start looking for a used power amp at around 100 watts. I'll probably just end up using the mixer on my cheap old Tascam 424 mixing/cassette four track for awhile... I figure this is probably the lowest cost, best bang for the buck solution right now, i.e. put the money in the most important part of the chain, which seems to be the speakers in this case...

if you get a powered speaker like the the one 89gtsleeper mentioned, you won't need a power amp. for a smallish rehearsal space, 1 speaker should give you enough coverage without creating a feedback nightmare. what are we talking? a garage or spare bedroom?

If that Carvin stuff actually sounds halfway decent and holds up, its got a nice pricepoint... I might consider Carvin when I eventually upgrade my live stuff... *hmm*

basement. I don't really think I need a 15" though... that powered 15" is tempting though.
