    crashing snare sound?

How do you get that big crashing snare sound (think Def Leppard or the Cure)? I've played with EQ, compression and reverb (in that order) and while I'm able to bring it up with compression the reverb just seems to move it back in space and thin it out. My problem has always been a snare that...

    bus vs straight

I record and mix in Logic. I have plenty of memory and processor juice to run multiple plugins on 20+ tracks at a time but my question is should I? Is it better to set up compressors and reverb on bus tracks and bring them in that way? Should I stick with one reverb for each track in the song...

    big guitar sound

Looking for tips on getting that big guitar sound on a recording. Not so much "thick" as much as "big" and orchestrated. I'm pretty reluctant to add reverb to guitars during the mix as this creates distance and sometimes thins the sound. All I really do is some EQing and compression but that...

    Ribbon mic screen damage

Just picked up an RSM-2 Nady ribbon mic on a scratch and dent sale. I've never owned a ribbon mic and I read good reviews on this one. The mic arrived with a big dent in the screen. Does this even matter? Will it effect the sound at all and should I take the thing apart and try to fix the dent...

    micing toms

Any recommendations for a good tom mic are greatly appreciated. I just added to my preamps so I have more tracks I can record at once. Traditionally I mic'ed drums snare, bass, 2 overheads but I wanted to split a mic for the toms. I tried using an AT 3030 condenser right between the two but it...

    Answer all my questions here

Things I've wondered but have never bothered asking? 1. What exactly does a power conditioner do? I have one on my processor rack and run power through it. Does it clean the power? Make it safer? 2. Can you record in stereo without a stereo mic? Dumb question maybe but I don't know. I own a...

    phase with the snare

recording 4 mics with drums. 57 on snare, 52 on bass, X/Y overhead condensers. My problem is the 57 on the snare comes out sounding "distant". I'm not putting any reverb on it. The bass drum is thick and the overheads sound great its just the 57 on the snare. I have it at a 90° angle about 2-3...

    Favorite "budget" condensor mic

I'm looking for something around the $300 range for recording vocals so can anyone recommend a good condensor mic in that range. Shure or AT possibly?

    phase reverse

My mixer does not have phase reverse on it nor does my software (Logic Pro). Does anyone know another way to reverse phase. I think I'm having a polarity issue with my drum recordings. Thanks.

    Phase correction

When recording drums I use 57 on snare, 52 on bass, and two overheaad condensors in a Y pattern. I have that part down. I mix each one at a time and everything sounds great individually. Once I go to mix the 4 tracks together the snare seems to get canceled out a bit. I guessing this is due to...

    Polarity

Can someone explain polarity to me in layman's terms. From what I understand you need to reverse polarity if one mic is micking up a signal at a different time? I've heard of reversing polarity in the mix but my software doesn't have that option. Is there a simple way to do this? Can you...

    Drums - bas/overhead(s)

Hopefully we're not sick of drum recording questions. I'm not a drummer but I can play and have one in my home studio. Its an old 60's Pearl kit. Here are my questions. 1. The bass drum front head is solid so no sound hole. I'm used to micing bass drums in the sound hole with a Beta 52. So do I...

    Gain Controls x 3

My basic set up (without all the processors) is a MOTU 828 firewire, an Alesis studio mixer, and an ART 2 channel rack mount tube preamp. The problem is they all have gain knobs (and phantom power). I noticed while recording vocals last night that the meter on the tube pre was barley moving so I...

    Recording Drums - Drummers?

So my set up is 57 on the snare, 52 on the bass, two Oktava 219s as overheads. I think the sound is sweet but my drummer has been complaining that he can't hear his toms enough during rolls. We tried moving the mics higher, lower, closers, angled. Anyone have advice and please don't say mic the...

    Logic vs GarageBand

or Garageband vs Logic. I record real instruments. I never use synthetic drums, loops, rarely even midi. I've gotten some good results from Garageband. Can someone give me a good reason to upgrade to Logic or even Logic Express?

    Octava condensors

I own 2. I think they're the 218s or something. Anyway they have 2 switches on them. One has a stright line when up and one has a curved up to straight line. Anyone know what these mean? Then the other switch has 3 settings with characters that I don't understand. I think they're in Russian. Can...

    the Basics

New to recording and even newer to mixing. I understand the concept of mixing each instrument differently so they stand out on thier own. Problem is I have this 31 band EQ in front of me and not sure what to do for drums vs guitar vs vocals vs bass . . . . Can someone explain to me the basics of...
