Indie Rock, AT 4047 on OH & Vocal

Here's a track I just finished. My band recorded the intrumental tracks live off the floor in a local art space where we were rehearsing, and I overdubbed the vocals. http://www.gearslutz.com/board/showthread.php?t=114670#post1182613 I used AT 4047s on OHs, a 4047 on the vocal, 57s on snare...

    Bare insulation as room treatment?

I am turning an old garage into a little studio space. The space is probably about 25 x 15 with a gable ceiling. Right now the room is far too wet, so I am considering different options for broadband room treatment. I know, of course, of the use of rigid fiberglass insulation for this purpose...

    Zuma-era Neil Young-ish song

This one is a driving song that I've been working on for the past few days. It's called "Black Ribbon". I played all the instruments and engineered it myself. I used all sub-$100 mics. http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=4959&a lid=-1 Cheers, Mike

    Epic Synth-Folk

I used all sub $130 (Can) mics for this recording -- the SP B1, MXL 990, and 57. I finished it yesterday. I wrote it in the morning and then recorded it in the afternoon in my basement. I play all the instruments. It's called "Don't Miss Your Ship"...

    Lo-Fi Awesomeness

Hey guys, I'm pretty stoked about this recording that I did yesterday. I did it with real shitty gear in a real shitty basement, but I'm pretty happy with the result. Take me down a notch if you see fit :) The song is called Hot Sparks...

    Pro Studio/Home Studio Hybrid

We spent a day at a really great studio in Vancouver (The Hive) where we tracked instruments for 8 songs. Then headed back to my humble home studio in Victoria to track vocals and overdubs. We doubled most instrumental parts (except bass). Our style is very informed by Neil Young's Trans...

    Stoned? Get stoned with this...

Here is a track. I wrote, played the intruments and recorded it yesterday evening and this afternoon. I used a pretty nice mic (the AT 4050) as the OH and vocal mic. On drums I also used an SM57 on kick. I DI'ed the bass and clean guitar parts, and miced my Marshall JCM800 for the distorted...

    Overdubbing by yourself:

God I hate it! You've got to set everything up, hit record and then run into the other room and play the part. So damn annoying...

    Expensive mic + Cheap pre = ?

My band just returned from a day at a great studio tracking instruments (live off the floor) for a demo. Now we're going to be overdubbing stuff in my humble home studio. The most imortant set of overdubs is, of course, vocals. I have cheapo gear including a studio projects vtb1 preamp and a...

    Low-Fi Folk-Rock

This is a tune I did with a couple cheap Chinese condensers (SP B1, MXL 990) and a SM 57. I play all the intruments and sing on it. The track is called Gordon Tawney. Tell me what you honestly think. http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=4611&alid=-1 Regards, Mike

    My Second Tune: 70's-y Rock

Hola Amigos, This is my second time throwing something up here for critique. I have taken a long hiatus owing to my backpacking trip around South America. The song is called "Long Distance" and it thematically refers to a time one year ago when my gf and I were apart. I wrote it at that time...

    Boosting output of vintage mic

Howdy, I just purchased a cheapo mic off of EBay for 1 Pound. It is the Sony F99. I tested it out this morning and the ouput is extremely weak (although I do like what output there is). None of my preamps has enough gain. The question is: Can I boost this mic's output, and, if so, how?

    Mackie Bass Amps?

My friend has an opportunity to buy an all-tube Mackie bass amp. I didn't know such a thing existed. Thoughts? Anyone ever used one?

    Panning Stereo Tracks

I am mixing a song in which both the drums and the acoustic guitar were tracked in stereo. What is a good way to pan them? Right now I have the guitar at about 80% right/ 60% left and the drums 50% left/ 30% right, but it doesn't sound right. Cheers.

    Recording Solo Acoustic & Voice

I need to record one guy playing guitar and singing at the same time. Here are the available mics: 3 SM57s, 1 SM58, 1 Beta 58, 1 MXL 990. Preamps: 1 SP VTB1, a Behri mixer. Running it through a Delta 1010. The guitar is a nice but somewhat boomy sounding 3/4 Martin. Yesterday, the best...

A Theoretical Question: EQ vs mic design

OK, I know that mic choice likely the most important aspect of the signal chain, and that the sound of a poor mic cannot be "fixed in the mix". This is the conventional wisdom, and I agree based on experience. However, I want to question this assumption for one moment. Theoretically, couldn't a...

A question regarding the physics of M-S stereo micing

So, I understand M-S stereo micing and how to accoplish it with the side, figure-8 mic added to the middle, directional mic in phase in one channel and out of phase in the other. My question is: How does this produce an accurate stereo image? Wouldn't this produce a stereo image that is not...
