Definately look into Gavin harrison. His DVDs and books are awesome, as well as his playing with Porcupine Tree.

    tuning a yamaha stage custom.

its funny... yesterday my friend and I tuned the school drum set, which was a stage custom. My suggestion: Coated Remo Ambassadors, and clear remo ambassadors as resonants.

    mapex opinions please

Birch will sound punchier and more aggressive, maple will still project just fine, but will be warmer and have a longer sustain. I think the Pro M (as well as the force 3005, which are made by sonor in the same factory as the Pro M), are great drums. I would recommend it... and you can also try...

    Evans vs Remo

The EC2's would have more tone. I would chose them.

What you aren't getting is that they arent hand made. they buy the shells from keller.... a 10 ply keller shell costs $45, and two put together (into 20 ply) costs about $100. And maybe at MOST $250 in hardware... so at most, that snare can be made for about $350... and maybe at most $100 for...

    Cracked cymbal

If I were you: A) Frisbie time B) Smash it up. Drill holes into the pieces... and you geta wind chime. C) Put it over another cymbal (preferably a china) to get a short, trashy accent. Or you could just drill out the crack.

There is no reason to spend so much money on keller shells. Its utter bullshit. I can order a 1 1/2 thick snare drum made of bubinga segmented shell, for about half the cost of that snare.

    Saluda Cymbals!!!

I've heard it a bit differently... I heard they buy their blanks from China, but do the finishing and hammering... the working of the cymbal is done by them... But the bronze is Chinese... basically a cheaper grade of zildjian/sabian alloy. I'm not 100% sure how true that is, but then again...
