Beginner Bass Package

Hey, I'm a drummer and I wanna get a bass (I've always been jealous of my bass playing friends). But I don't want to make the same mistake that I did with drums (buy a really cheap drums et that only lasted for 7 months). My price range is anywhere from $150-$400 (thats bass, amp, and everythign else). What good starter packages are there? Or, what good intermmediate quality bass and amps are there that I can get used for cheaper? Thanks in advance.

If I were to spend money on a bass setup and I was in your shoes, this is what I would get.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Bass/Electric?sku=510627 - Squier Standard Jazz Bass ($229)

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Bass/Amps?sku=481459 - Peavey 126 Practice combo amp ($69)

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Guitar/Accessories?sku=367253 - Ernie Ball Strap ($6)

That right there alone is only $306. Plus a cable of your choice which should undoubtedly bring you under $400. My 2 cents though is that you save up another $100 and get a Fender Precision Bass instead of the squier above. Hope this helps.

I've decided to get the bass above, because of its stunning beauty and the good reviews I read about it. Im kinda upset because the only music stores near me dont sell any good basses... Just expensive ones or really crap ones, none in between. But I'm a beginner, so I don't think I will notice any noticeable flaws, and the ebay ones seem to sell at decent rates in case I find out I dont like it. Now... what amp is good? I will get it used, and I've decided to extend to price range to $450.
