Rims

Less holes in the drum, oh and fairly well, but not enough to even be noticed through a mix. For convience sake regular mounts are great.
 
If the drum is high qualty and tuned well, Rims make a HUGE difference in resonance and overall volume. If the drum is crap and the tuning isn't balanced, Rims won't make much difference.

Hit your drum mounted on the regular mount. Then hold it by the rim and hit it. That will tell you. ;)
