What changes when you select small or large reel on a Teac 3440?

Just wondering - does anyone know what changes when you select small or large reel on a Teac 3440? If I use a plastic reel with prerecorded music that is a large arbor reel, should I select small or large reel? (Especially since I am using a 10.5" reel for takeup?) Thanks, jv

Would you buy new tape on 7" metal reels?

I would! What would you pay? For example, you can buy new RMGI on plastic reels from fullcompass.com as per: LPR35 1800' $21.50 SM468 1200' $15.75 SM911 1200' $16.25 What premium would you pay for metal reels? Or, maybe you don't buy new tape?

    Prerecorded tape swap anyone?

I have 3 prerecorded tapes at 3 3/4 ips that I can't use. I'd happily swap them for 3 prerecorded tapes at 7 1/2 ips. Two are classical, one "other." I'll get titles if anyone bites. Thanks, jv

    Source for 7" metal reel?

My one and only plastic 7" take up reel is warped, so I often use a 10.5" metal reel for takeup. This is a pain, though, flipping a pre-recorded tape over. Is there a source for new 7" metal reels? They are way too expensive for me on eBay. Thanks, jv

Manual for Teac Model 2A Mixer and MB-20 Meter Bridge?

I just bought a Teac Model 2A Mixer with the MB-20 Meter Bridge, and I have ben unable to find manuals on-line for theses. Does anyone have these, or know of a source? Thanks, jv

How "aggressive" should reel brakes act?

I have a newly acquired, first-for-me Teac A-3440 tape deck that has "been through the shop." The brakes were supposedly adjusted. With the machine stopped, they grab more in one direction than the other, when turing the reels by hand, which one would expect, since they are "single leading...

    Operating level and tape characteristics

(fourth(?) in a series of stupid newbie questions that are specific to Analog - tape, etc.). So, having my deck back from service for a couple of weeks, I tried something out. It's supposedly set up for a 185 nW/m operating level. I recorded a 440 Hz tone at 0 Vu. On new Quantegy 406 it...

    Paper or plastic?

We've all heard that phrase before. I'm talking about leader tape, though. What do you use? Why? I'm new, and need supplies. I'm leaning towards paper. I don't like the static cling of poly; I like the idea of higher friction on threading onto a takeup reel. I'd appreciate input on this.

Splicing tape substitute, in a pinch?

Is there any household adhesive tape one could use when out of splicing tape? I mean, is Scotch invisible better than masking tape?

Teac A-3440 partial disassembly help please

Interesting, the service manual for the 3440 is not a repair manual; it doesn't tell how to troubleshoot, repair, or even disassemble most part of the unit. The parts manual is helpful, in that it has exploded vies, but there's no explicit disassembly guide. What I need to determine is, what...

Rolling or rotating lifters and arms?

(Second in a series of stupid newbie tape questions): Why don't tape deck lifters and tension arms have rotating contact surfaces? Is it because of potential flutter issues? Is it because of magnetization issues? I think rotating contact surfaces would last much, much longer, and would...

    Stupid newbie questions

I was going to post this in the newbie forum, but it's very specific to analog. I just got my first tape deck. I bought some used, old tapes - one is a 10" reel 3M tape from the '50's, in the box, with classical music on it - maybe recorded off the air. The question is, what are the...

Preferred, "Best" tape for 3440 at 250 nW/m?

I will be picking up my new-to-me Teac 3440 from the shop today. I asked for an operating level of 250 nW/m, although he was advocating 320. I'd like your opinion on what the ideal, all around tape for recording live music would be, a tape that is in current production and/or available new. I...

Noob mic phantom power, cable, balun question

New to audio engineering, but I've been around electronics for a while. Condenser mic requiring phantom power, 20 to 30' balanced mic cable, into phantom power supply (no mixer yet) and then need an unbalanced 1/4" phone plug for input to a -10dB tape amp (Teac 3440). I've looked at the...

    Different reel sizes?

If I'm winding tape from one reel size to another, say, in the extreme, a 5" plastic supply reel to a 10.5" metal takeup reel: 1. Is this O.K.? 2. hwo shall I set the reel size selector (large/small, Teac 3440). Thanks, jv
