I've been looking to upgrade my interface for awhile now. I've been looking at the Zoom r16 for a few months and I wanna get once I get the cash. Before that I want to know if the pre amps are any good and can you get TRUE multitrack recording with like 6 or 7 different tracks.

Yep, and you can plug it into a computer and use it as an interface and control surface if you ever decide to.

I've owned one for almost a year now and it's performed flawlessly. The pre's are ok. Not great but not a penalty box either. I use mine as an interface and control surface for Sonar 8. I haven't had a nit to pick with it yet.

I am auditioning one now-I would rate the preamps as marginal for quiet program material due to a noticeable noise floor. Passable for shredding and busier mixes.

i've had one for roughly a year now. i'd say that the R16 is a very useful tool for getting your feet wet in the world of recording. i've used mine numerous times to record entire bands. the upsides with the product is the fact its 3 in one. an interface. a standalone recorder and also a control surface. the pre's are perfectly adequate considering the price of the R16. i tend to use mine as an interface now primarily as i find it easier, however as a standalone recorder i think it's pretty well stocked with features such as FX that are user friendly and also easliy adjustable. the downside with the R16 i personally find is that it lacks full phantom power along all inputs, it doesn't have motorized faders and that also it can be a bit of a hassle (i foudn personally) to set up with some DAWS.

i would definitely recommend it as a puchase for a new starter.

all the recordings on this site---> http://soundcloud.com/phil-bainsfair were done on my R16

On the most recent track i recorded which was Confess:
i used an SPB1 on the acoustic.
a set of superlux mics on the drums and D112 on the kick.
SM58 on the vocals. all going through the R16 into Reaper
the bass was di'd into line6 pod farm and then run into reaper also.

I rented the R16 and liked it enough that when I went back to the store I bought the R24. The R24 is basically the same unit however it has a built in sampler and is of course 24 tracks, I figured the extra $70 was worth the sampler and 8 extra tracks. I am finding it a little confusing trying to "make" drum tracks but hopefully I figure something out here. All feedback I have heard of these Zoom recorders has been nothing but positive
