This is sort of a Rockabilly song that I wrote and recorded. I played it to a canned drum track and then, after I had the guitars, bass, and vocals down, I sent it off to Charlie Morgan who played the drums you hear out of his studio in Nashville.

I work in Cubase 5 and I use Waves plugs and UAD-1 plugs for the most part. Do you think that this mix is good enough for commercial uses like film placement?

This is well done. The performances are great and I like the way the vocals and rhythm guitars sound. Very authentic.

I wouldn't have thought the drums were real had you not noted so above! The playing is so precise and the way they've been processed sounds a little strange to me. They're kind of far back in the mix, which is fine for this style I think, but I wish the snare had at least some thwack to it, you know? It sounds awfully dark to me. Also, I was surprised by the lead tone towards the end. It's nice, but it had kind of a lot of gain, in a more modern rock kind of way. I would've expected something twangier, cleaner and/or with more grit I guess?

I wouldn't presume to judge the commercial potential of the track as I am not a professional or anything...hope this helps. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Man,
I am digging your song "Boombox"!!! Great guitar work..kind of the dead meets Beck. There could be some kind of break to create some tension. but it is really cool....Tom

dead meets Beck...yup, that's pretty much the idea - thanks!

Your track is very good. I hope it didn't seem like I was picking at it too much.

dead meets beck is exactly our Heat.

I agree with his comments about the drums being too far back in the mix. Bring them up a bit, well maybe not the overheads so much as the snare and kick.

Performance is spot on. Voice has a nice distinct tonal quality that matches the genre nicely.

Work on the drums and you're good to go.

This is well-done. Good balances. Got that country-classic rock tone to your mix. You use analog gear?

No, Cubase5, MIB. I use a GR MP2NV, a Summit TLA-100, A U-67, Beyer Ribbon, and an SM-57 going in. Not sure what Charlie mics his drums with...he is a Sennheiser endorsee but I don't know which model.

Thanks for the kind words.
