Question.

In the "Which compressor for drum submix thread" you mentioned doing a seperate kick track instead of a seperate compressed track in my "only have 4 track simultaneous recording capability" situation.

Dumb question but would you then leave the kick out of the stereo drum mix ........ i.e. keep it completely seperate????

We did some test runs where I did the kick track and had a prominent kick in the stereo mix also.
It sound good but I am wondering if I leave it out of the stereo track it wont "get in the way" at mixdown.

The drummer's kit (handmade and ssoouuuuwwweeeeeet) has a huge bass drum. Its like 3 feet deep and the RE20 pick up a lot of body so had to use some extreme EQ but sounds sharp and fat.
I'm guessing I will need to reallly scoop the solo kick track and give it even more click as the tracks stack up.

I am using the DBX 286a for the parallel compression on the kick/snare/toms, BTW, and its sounds pretty darn good. I think I learned how to use that compressor accidentally tonight.

Well tonight was setup and tomorrow is the real deal.

Well..... decided use the kick in both.

Tried it without the kick sent to the stereo buss mix and with it in the stereo buss mix and its own track.

With it only on its own track the overall sound was a little cleaner and leaner but we decided it was too lean.
The kit lost a lot of power.

So I left it a little "woofy" in the stereo mix and dialed in a tight "snap" on the solo track.

This way I can adjust the "definition" as the mix warrants.

Also the little extra "woof" gave a nice pillow for the real low end of the bass track (dialed in mostly from the DI portion and real clean).

BTW I did need a heafty scoop out of the kick solo track as well as some roll off from about 75-80.
No compression on the solo kick track.
Dont think I'll need it.

I also put the high pass on the 286a and it seemed to be a better blend bringing it back under the stereo mix.
Hammered about 15-20 dB of reduction witha medium "density" and brought it up about 30-40% and it gave a nice beef to the whole kit.

I tell ya, when the instruments are good it makes recording them soooo much easier.

Sorry I didn't get to you sooner. Took an impromptu trip to Vegas.

I wouldn't have mixed the kick in with the rest of the kit's tracks but if it works, great. You might try burning a CD and listening on some other systems. A lot of time when you get the bass/kick to where it sounds great on near fields it will be way too much on full range systems.

No problem.

Its weird we did 2 songs with the kick out of the 2 mix but then did the 3rd with it in and it just sounded fuller.

so we re-cut the 1st two.

I just posted a link to one of the songs in the clinic.
Please critique.

I had to load this mix in to the computer using only headphones and it shows but the intro will at least give a basic picture.

The kick comes in too hot and might need a little evening after all.

So...... did you win????
