Massive Master's "desert island" post on the SM81's gave me the idea, then I searched and couldn't find one on the mic board....so here it goes:

What mics are ABSOLUTELY essential. What mics would you get if you could only get a few and still wanted to be able to record almost anything. So far I think the SM57, and par Massive Master's comment, maybe the SM81 fall into this category. Any others?

I'd probably choose the Beyerdynamic M201 instead of the sm57. Great mic, even for overheads!

one of these--- AT 3035,4033,4040, SPc1, Rode(Something,1a?),
two of these-----oktava mc012, marshall 603, sp c4, rode(something?)
one of these----- sm 57, 421, 441, re 20 (my pick, could double duty on bass drum),
one of these---- Rode NTK, Groove Tube 1b, neumann 103, sp t3, cad m179,
akg 2000 (for Richie),
Not exhaustive, but you'd get by

Imagine you have access to only one type of mic and you have to record a soul band. Kick, snare, OH, guitar amp, bass amp, Hammond/Leslie, vocals, percussion and horns/woodwinds.

There are a couple of mics that could make a great sound out of all these instruments: the Senny MD421 and 441, the Beyer M201 (even great on vocals), the Beyer M88 and probably a few which I don't own. (RE20?)

I have some doubts about the SM57.

If I was on a desert island and could only have one mic I'd either want something that I could throw at small mammals in the hope of killing them for food or a mic I could sharpen into a knife-like object to chop down branches for shelter. I'm thinking an MXL603, as a more streamlined SDC would provide better options than most large diaphragms.

I don't have a desert island mic. I do have a desert island pre and it's the Great River MP-2NV.

Hmmmm. How many filtered, grounded electrical outlets do you have on your desert island?

I just came back from a deserted island in the Caribbean (honeymoon), and one thing that I did not miss was a microphone! :D :D

On a more serious note, I actually have to agree with the Neumann ads (how ridiculous is that??): the KM184 is in fact incredible versatile (sounds good on almost any source, including vocals), and I like its small size. Its almost like a Swiss army knife, and fits into every pocket ;) Honestly, it beats the crap out of most other mics when placed in front of an instrument.

IMO, some of the "must have" type mics are the MD421, RE20, SM57, SM-7, SM81, C42, M201, M88, and etc.

What's to record on a desert island?
That may affect mic choice...
