I'm using Yamaha XG SoftSynthetizer S-YXG70 with Cakewalk Pro Audio 9. I have a SoundBlaster PCI 128 soundcard, a Pentium III and Windows 98. How do I make wav or mp3 files with my beats?

By the way, is there anything better than Yamaha XG SoftSynthetizer S-YXG70??? It's ok, but I need something better for Rap and Techno. Anybody has a suggestion?

Dude If you want to make some real music please get away from MIDI as much as you can. Go and Download Fruityloops and the start downloading Soundfonts, Fruityloops and cakewalk go well together to me im using that myself. you may want to use midi for an effects track maybe but believe me man play a soundfont then play a midi note and get the BIG difference

Tony, I dont really think you are correct there. Midi is a machine language, you are confusing Synths vs. Samplers with Midi.

Hi DJ17,
Sorry you havent had many replies. My comments would be.
1) Buy yourself a better soundcard a soundblaster live! series card would be better initially, especially for using soundfonts.
2) Dont use softsynths. Instead sort out a good soundfont and how to load it into CWPA 9. Try going to Hammersounds.net on the net to download some suitable soundfonts.
3) If you want to make rave type music look at loop and pattern sequencers like Fruityloops (as has been mentioned) and Acid pro.
These products tend to concentrate on quickly producing looped music from synth samples the s/ware provides, rather than having to record and mix midi data from keyboards and use instruments from soundfonts.
4) You can export wav and mp3 from the file menu in CWPA 9 under export audio file.

Cheers

DavidK's right. The only way to play a Sound Font is as MIDI notes.

"Stay away from MIDI" is about the worst possible advice for a budding electronic musician that can be offered.

what's a soundfont? and hammersounds.net doesn't work

a friend gave me Acid Pro 2.0, it's pretty cool but when i make a beat out of it i don't feel like i created it entirely... it kinda makes me less proud--- i mean i can make some real good shit with cakewalk... i made about 32 beats with it, and 6 techno songs, and some of them are real fucking good--- all that's left is how to make these songs in mp3--- which i can't figure out...

oh well thanks a lot for your advice everyone

Hammersounds are at
http://www.hammersound.net/hs_soundfonts.html
(I just put "soundfont hammersound" into google!)

If you want to use soundfonts I believe you need to upgrade your soundcard to e.g. a Soundblaster live! Please correct me someone if I'm wrong!

Have u tried exporting file as an mp3 as suggested? In sonar its in file/export audio. Failing this

And this assumes that your soundcard can both record and play at the same time!

1) Record it with sound recorder (windows file in start/programs/accessories/entertainment)
have CWPA 9 in play and sound recorder in record.
2) SAVE IT (AS WAV) in sound recorder
3) Download "cdex" a free utility and convert wav file to mp3

Hope that spells it out clearly.

To find out about soundfonts try typing "Soundfont explanation" in www.google.com it would be easier than having all this toing and froing!

FILE>EXPORT AUDIO

No that won't work, with Cakewok, you have to PLAY BACK the Midi file and record it onto a NEW AUDIO TRACK at the same time.

Set your Recording Properties (in the Volume Control) to MASTER-

Or "What you hear" if you are using the SCRODSUCKING SB Interface (Delete that crap, use the windows volume crontrol, it is easier)

then Arm the audio track for recording and play back the Midi track after you have automated it

Presto, WALLA: You have a brand new WAV file
