After much thought and research, I am torn between Yamaha hs80m and Dynaudio BM5A's what do you think, Bm's about three hundred more...Also, I do mostly pop,r&b gospel, jazz and I read a post on here saying Dyn's were NOT good for those types of music...mostly good for rock. Is this true? I heard both and liked both...a little more of the Dynaudio for sure and yet I liked the YAMAHA AND for sure the price. What do you think?

I have not checked the Yamahas, but I own Dynaudio BM8A's (not the 5's), and found them to be excellent and diverse- especially for acoustic guitar

I should keep my mouth shut since I haven't heard either model, but let me mention a few things since its your first post. First, welcome! This forum is definitely a great place to learn, and it has helped me a lot during the past few years. Which brings me to my second point: musical tastes and preferences vary greatly here--even among people who have heard the same product. In your case, most of us have probably not heard both monitors (especially the Yammies since they're so new), so we'll generally lean in the direction we know. I do it all the time. By the way, I read a lot and have read great pro reviews of both monitors--more of the Dyns, maybe because they've been around longer.

Typically, when researching here, all I do is look for trends among responses to find which products seem to please the greatest number of people. That's easy to do for low-cost mics, which people buy a lot of, but can be much harder for more expensive items like higher-end monitors. Which brings me to my final point, a suggestion from my humble experience: if you can swing it, but both monitors and use them in your own studio space for a few days. Just make sure you can return one set, of course. When I've followed this approach myself, I've found that one product usually wins me over pretty quickly in the comfort of my own home--and it's not always the most recommended. Comparing three sets of monitors in my own home yielded an easy decision that I can live with for some years.

Again, welcome and good luck with your decision.

First of all thanks for the welcome. I have heard both and they both have their good qualities, belive me. I seem to be leaning toward the Dyns...mostly because of sound but it would appear that the concept of "truth" and "honest" and "flat" is important in sound of a monitor. I have spent about a week reading these forums untill my head was ready to explode...so MANY different opinions! So i went down to two local GC and listen. I must say though after all I read about the KRK i WAS NOT impressed at all.
Heard them in two stores...I thought maybe it's me. Anyway I don't think I can get both pairs but I'll probably listen some more. The YAMAHAS sound REALLY REALLY GOOD, if you have not heard them. And yet I "read" on here that they appear to favor you mixes a bit...and I REALLY want something honest and truthful so that I can produce the best tracks. Again Thank you all for you reply. Oh and by the way, the BM5A'S ARE INCREDIBLE...INCREDIBLE.

Did you take a cd of music you've produced and listen to it on both models?
Thats about the best thing you can do besides testing them in your own studio...
I own Dynaudio BM6A's and they work amazing for jazz, funk, acoustic, new age, r&b, rock, etc.
Im not trying to confuse you more but you may want to take a look at the new Adam A7's...

Sounds like you can't really make a bad choice if both monitors sound so good to you. I agree with Matt, though--take some of your own music that you know very well and really put these monitors to the test. Which monitors highlight what you like best and least in your own mixes and in any pro recordings that you know particulary well?

For pro reviews, the Yammies have been all over the place lately. I definitely saw them reviewed in SOS mag (available online) within the past month and in a couple of other current issues of mags (was it EQ and Future Music?). If I recall correctly, the 8" model received positive nods while the 5" model required the matching sub to be useful.

I read several Dyn reviews some months back, the most interesting of which was in Tape Op mag (my favorite source for reviews, along with SOS). In issue #49, Sept/Oct 2005, you'll find two back-to-back lengthy reviews of the BM5A: one reviewer liked the 5As so much that he bought them. The other reviewer also generally praised them but found them a bit "too clear" (an interesting criticism) for use with his live recordings. These reviews are certainly worth a read if you're still on the fence.

I listened to these in a store I liked the Dyns..for whatever that means to your ears?

yeh, J...SOS, I'm skeptical of all the mags motives...but SOS always does the neg's and positives summary which seems balanced imo.

I just read an old review on my 1year old Tascam 2488 DAW and they were pretty much right on with my views in summary. this is just one example of several, but it may help gather information.

I've recently come to the train of thought you need more than one set of speakers. :D

You want the clear, monitors to hear the microscopic tracking and mixes and others for playback "normal average joe stereo nearfields" like the NS10's.

One speaker set can't do both jobs as their different tools really.

The pros have the HUGE WALL Soffit speakers for the microscopic stuff, we HR's don't...so I'd say go with the clearest detailed you can get.

There's plenty of "playback" check systems around...though you may have to get out of your chair to do it! :p

got it thanks all.

I think that will be a good idea as far as taking my own stuff in...i will do that for sure... will check our articles as well...thanks all for the feedback. ;)

Keep in mind that the pro's do not use the huge soffit mounted mains NEARLY as much as you think.

Soffits

Yeah, I use the near fields over the big Auspergers and Tannoys that we use. In the end monitor selection is like a Porsche or a BMW, it's a matter of what speaks to you.

Ordered the bm5a

Well after taking my stuff inot the store to listen on both monitors I ordered the Dyns. I REALLY liked the sound of the YAMAHAS, don't get me wrong...but I MORE liked the flat honest sound of the BM5A's. I really want true mixes, and a not really anything that colors the sound and you have go back and forth after you play them on the worst boom box. The yamahas are much brighter and have an awesome full sound...sort of like a home stereo system. So, the BM5A's of course were three hundred dollars more, and yet I am confident they will get the job done....they also soound really good as well...very balanced.

Interesting that we both ended up on the same path and came to the same conclusion - I followed the advice in this thread and listened to a couple of my mixes - I was actually down to the Event ASP8, the yammies and the Dyns - It's so weird how the Dyns are so much smaller but still seem to keep the same weight and full image that the larger ones do - Swallowing hard as I get ready to drop this 1k down!!

did GC yesterday. Dyn 5A are still my favorites.
heard the Yam's and the new JBL's....and a few others.
the DYN's are just great imo. clear and pleasent.
the JBL's were JBL's ,,,sounded very similar to my Control5's, alot of mid's.
the DYN's were just a pleasure to hear.

These Are Totally Awesome!

You guys these are too much. Have been in my studio mixing for the past two days on my nes BM5AS. My sh#$% has NEVER sounded better. I thought I would pull out some old stuff and just re-do it over and I AM AMAZED AT WHAT I HAD BEEN MISSING. The clarity of the DYNS the honesty the truthfulness is amazing. There was a time I would go thru CD'S like water listening and remixing...these are true to the ears. My first mixes came out exactly as I heard them from the board and thru these monitors. Sounded good in the walkman, the cheap hi fi speakers I've had for ten years, the car....i'm am shocked! These are the best monitors and well worth the thousand bucks....WELL WORTH IT!
Thanks for your imput and now back to the studio! :D :)
