Hi everybody. How's it going?
I'm thinking of purchasing a Yamaha MC-1204. Does anyone have any info on it? I can't find anything online anywhere. It's 12x4 and I don't really know what that means. I'm kind of jumping into studio equipment and I can get it for 190 bucks and I'm not bad at picking up on things rather quickly.

Also, if purchasing an open reel multi-track recorder... if it's say, 8 tracks, are you able to record one one track, play it back while recording on another track? As in, Record guitar on track one. play track one and listen while you're recording bass on track two. I'm just curious and I don't know anybody that's into recording equipment.
Thanks for any help!

This vendor is selling one used for $300. The 12/4 (apparently) refers to channels/outputs.

Then, there is also this model, which, though from Russia, is (I believe) plug compatible with modern American components.

You might want to slow down and do some more research first. With all multitrack recorders you can playback and record more tracks at the same time. I wouldn't go with an analog reel to reel unless you are VERY familliar with maintenance on them.

Yeah ... you seem to be putting the cart before the horse ... and you can get a brand new mixer for that money that won't have the vintage look (or the VU meters) but will have a warranty and likely a lower noise floor.

Why are you do desperate for these particular things? If I was setting out with a bit of money now I'd only be looking at one of the many digital solutions ... the most obvious of which is using a half-decent computer to get good results.

The very basics of recording are covered here:
