Glad it worked out okay, Drathbun:)

All we need to do now is get Kirstin's Layla working with WDM drivers:(
Kirstin, I think that Outlook saves all of Outlook in an Autoarchive file that is automatically set in O/look. These settings can be changed/reset using Outlook> Tools>Autoarchive. In the window, it will also display the file name where your archive file is stored. This includes attachments.

With these situations I recommend a complete reinstall (including a re-format of the harddrive). It's a lot of work, but whatever it takes, right? ;)

If drathbun could make it work with Pauls advice, and kgirl can't, I would say somethings seriously wrong with either the OS or the machine itself. :(

Thanks guys!

Glad it worked for you drathbun. I think it will for me too. I just need to go that (minor) extra mile and do some backup work. It may get put on the back burner for a bit while I get through some of my class projects. Advertising sucks. Don't ever major in it--you'll never be able to get to anything else. Kidding-sort of.

I think moskus is correct. I have a feeling that a clean re-install may be just the ticket. I guess it could be the machine, but it works great in every other capacity, so I'm guessing it is the way the OS is setup. Not that I have a clue what I'm talking about or anything.

Thanks again!

Hey Drathbun,

Could you do me a favor? Just curious to see something. You're running Windows XP, right? If you are, go into the control panel, click on system, hardware, find device manager, then click the + sign next to computer. Under that does it say "standard pc" or Advanced Configuration something or other (ACPI)? Just wondering how you are set up. Mine is set to ACPI, and there are about 4 devices on the same IRQ as my sound card. Either one I use. This is, I think, my problem. But if yours has ACPI as well, maybe it's not my problem.

Thanks,
Kirstin

Just a little tip: ACPI is highly recommended on laptops.

kgirl:

It says "Advanced Computer and Power Interface (ACPI) Computer"

I think I have the same problem as you however. Now that I have set Sonar to "Always Use MME" my Yamaha AC-XG doesn't show up to create MIDI sounds like it did in Cakewalk PA9.

This bummed me for a time and I thought I might have to return to PA9 and forget about Sonar.

Then I clicked on the DXi icon in Sonar and it showed me my Alien Connections Revalver, but I clicked the "Insert Dxi Instruments and Rewire Devices" and got a list of synth stuff. One thing on the list was my Edirol VSC 1 (Virtual Sound Canvas). This sofware came with my Edirol USB MIDI interface. By inserting a synth track this way I got MIDI access again!

I'm just a day into Sonar and it seems there are a lot of new goodies. I noticed other DXi devices on the list too... like the FXExpansion that looks like a MIDI drum machine. I use Fruity Loops for that stuff but some of this looks cool.

This may not help with getting your Layla to work but it seems to be a workaround the WDM driver problem. WDM worked fine for me in Cakewalk PA9.... I don't get it!

Drathbun, looks like you are getting cracking with all this stuff now:) BTW, you can now use F.Loops as a Dxi working under Sonar, opening FL as a drum synth, recording directly to Sonar.;)

With a bit of luck I might be getting my new laptop today so I will be going all through this again:(
Kirstin, don't tell him I told you but dachay is a marketing pro! And I used to belong to the British Chartered Institute of Marketing too, when Marketing was the main part of my job then;) So best of luck with your studies.

Paul, did you forget already? ;)

FL shows up as a VSTi, you need a wrapper to use it in Sonar.

A wrapper? What's that? Like MC Hammer or something?

There are two standards for effects and virtual instruments, VST and DirectX (DX). VST is developed by Steinberg (creator of Cubase) and it's getting old, but there's a ton of VSTi's (VST instruments) and VST effects around the web.

Sonar doesen't support VST at all. If you want to use VST-effects and VSTi's in Sonar, you need a VST wrapper. What it does it takes an VSTi and "transform" it to a DXi, meaning Sonar can use it. The best wrapper, in my opinion, is the fxPansion VST-DX wrapper.

FruityLoops supports both VST and DX, but can only be used as an instrument via VST.
