Which ones have you already used?

XP home / pro are pretty close other that some minor options. I've used both. I like pro. Somebody on here can go into more depth on it I hope...

i asked the same question awhile back when building my system. what i learned is that there really isn't any huge differences between the two except Networking stuff. supposedly Pro is stronger and has more features when it comes to creating networks. i wish i still had the link to show you.

also, beware that all new XP versions they are selling are coming with SP2...and not all software programs work well with it quite yet. so check on that before you buy it too. (i wasted a hundred bucks 'cause I didn't think about it)

The PC will only be used as a DAW. It will not be networked on on the internet.

If you are not doing network or internet, XP Home is absolutely fine. No need to pay for pro.

timboz. xphome will be fine.
please do yourself a favor and consider using an overspecd power supply.
some of the power supplies out there in clone land sometimes dont meet rated spec. if you post your config your considering , i'll try to spot any potential probs. i dont want to dissuade you from a p4. thats your decision.
but you might want to read up on the link i posted 2 days ago which was a full performance analysis of the amd 64 and its low latency for audio work.
as well as p4 performance analysis.
and you also might want to peruse teachers posting on his amd 64 performance.

peace.

Dude, I'm getting a Dell.
Dimension 4700. 3.00ghs 800fsb with HT 512meg ram. 80gb serial ATA hard drive. (will add 2nd hard drive later). 2 17inch flat pannel displays.
For a sound card I will be usinag a E-Mu 1212m, to connect my Fostex VF160 and/or my ADA 8000. The main programs I will be using is Adobe Audition 1.5 and FL Studio 4.
PC will have XP home but I have XP pro from my old PC.
Also should I install service pack 2 and use H/T.

Personally I'm staying away from SP2 until I'm sure it won't screw with my audio. (I have a Dell, too. It rocks. Dimension 8300)

I use XP pro, Home would suffice too. I would stay away from 98se, its an old platform and its only a matter of time before you would have to upgrade anyway. Secondly if you plan on using Cubase SX 98 wouldnt cut it because SX only supports win2000/XP platforms.

That did suck for me because I wanted SX and I couldnt use it because I had Win ME installed (sucks anyway). I also had the Lexicon Core 2 audio interface, and that didnt support XP either, so I had to buy a new sound card too.

Good Luck!

I use XP home, with the SP2, and I don't have any problems with it. I just upgraded my RAM to 512, so my POS Compaq is running great now. I didn't notice any latency problems, but I am using Sony Vegas 5.0, and it's pretty high end. I got it as a gift, and my eyes bugged out of my head when I researched it and found out what it can do. The part that blew my mind was it was on sale for $500.00. I have some really cool friends, huh?
