XLR "gender"???

Which is which?

I'd assume that the end of an XLR with the prongs would be male, is this correct? The end then that plugs into most mic's being female???
 
Correct. The useful thing to remember, though, is that the pins point in the direction of the signal flow.

yeah, a good rule of thumb is that if it "plugs into something", it's male......and that if "something plugs into it", it's female. you know......kinda like people (well, almost). :D
