Taking the slow road
saw a guy on myspace, I guess it's prolly cool; cuz i remember when i p/u a 5 string and was confused, thinking it was overkill, but i quickly fell in love, been looking for an affordable one ever since, no luck yet, but 9?

All I can say is that when you hear/see someone that knows what to do with the extra strings you'll get it. If he's doing it to play 3 chord rock tunes, it's ridiculous, but I've seen some incredible players do very cool stuff with the many stringed basses. I'm not one of those guys. I play 4 happily.

Matthew plays an 8 (octave strings) & 12 (Don't know) to good effect on Altered Beast & the bassist from Cheap Trick used to use 8 & 12 though not to any significant effect.
As a basic bassist I can't see a) the need b) the point c) how I'd get my widdle hands around it.
But 11 strings, triggering K.board etc - get a band man or check Walter's MP3 Mixing listing to see what a one man band can do with a guitar & MINIMAL tecnology.

Lol that's one big ass bass.
As for an affordable 5-string...check Thomann.de for the harley benton 500tbl they do a fretted and fretless version, 4/5/6 string and around £110 each + £10 delivery, takes about 7days to get her but i have had items in 2-3days.
