Writing a song after a relationship ends

But what if you decide you're happy the relationship ended? Then playing it lots will be a good reminder...and, either way, if you make money off of it, then SOMETHING good will have come of it.

Also, not to sound rude, but I'm curious why you think we should we care if you don't like songs with a woman's name as the title? If you don't like them, then don't read our lyrics or play the songs. What if I don't like songs that use the word "the" anywhere in the lyrics...I don't think folks'll stop just because of that.

Well a 'glad your gone' song is ok, but personally I wrote a pretty depressing song that just brings back a failed relationship so can't really play it as it's just a bad reminder.

With very few exceptions they seem to be really OTT naff songs when it's a woman (or a child's name), no-one has to stop...i was just having stating a little thing that nags at me....many things do...that's what forums are for haha.

the one exception is Rosanna by Toto which is amazing..

I always write songs during emotional times...whether it be amidst elation of the heart or turmoil of the soul.

At the time, it feels really good, to do the venting/expressing thing...but later I realize just how much I have revealed of my heart/soul...and with all of the music sites online, have now officially plastered it all over the internet. ...then not too long after, I find myself doing it again. That is a sure sign of retardation.


You'd be better off tattooing their name on your chest, cause you could at least do a cover up tat...when have you ever heard a remake of a song with a new name in it?....hmmmm....wha'da idea!!!

True is right - some of the best songs come from break ups... As mentioned, try writing it with a tone where you are happy with the breakup or the other guy/gal is to blame and you're the winner.

I try to write the idea down and then walk away. Hoping to return at another date when I don't care. that leaves me with a thought on the song but no feelings are tide to that moment when it hurt so much.

........are universal themes. That's why we relate to them so strongly. They are the Mom, God, and Apple Pie of the music industry. Don't be afraid of the pain that writing may bring you. Think of all those with similar circumstances who may be healed by listening to your efforts. (And make your efforts worth listening to!)

As far as the specific name goes you might want to listen to True's advice and just get a memory tat.
