Now you're a song writer.

Carry on.

You get to write "song writer" on your tax forms. SOMEONE GET THIS MAN A COOKIE!

Next year, type "pretentious asshole" in the "your occupation" block.

writers Block

I fear that I am afflicted with eternal writer's block. :(

I think everybody who replyed gave something of use, in my opion a song starts with a hook , and you can find hooks everyware, TV , Movies comericals, even another song, get a notepad and just keep writing hooks, hooks are words to inspire you first you take the hook and Brainstorm words, from words come sentances from sentances to verses then to a song, good luck and never give up, actually I was just thinking, ( writes Block ) theres a hook , trying to find the right words to say to somebody you love or somebody you can't stand.

I suffer commonly from writers block. Most of the time when i cant write its due to a lack of inspiration that often comes during going through a difficulty or something great outside of the "norm". I guess i would say find what inspires you and surround yourself with it and see what happens. ik its not that easy, but its at the very least worth a try.

weird. most people draw inspiration from difficulty and situations that aren't routine.

That's true...but I think he means that he can't write when he is in the midst of a difficulty or major event.

It's like...if your old lady just dumped you today or you were in the middle of a divorce period in your life...I doubt would feel inspired to write about it at that particular time...but a little bit afterwards, after your feelings have a chance to "simmer" a bit, then yeah, you CAN be inspired by that difficulty.

So how many of you find that you have more writing "juice" following a bad/negative period VS. when you are in the midst of a steady & level "happy" period?

i am NEVER inspired to write regardless of my mental condition. Every song is like pulling teeth.

I'm that way with lyrics. I hate lyrics. Thankfully, I don't care and just write whatever and call it good.

that's what i meant. i can write an awesome song while watching television with a guitar in my hand.

Right. I can come up with good themes for lyrics. Like, I want this lyrical idea to go with this riff in this song using this melody....and then I can't write any actual words.

yep. i prefer lyrics to imply a specific sentiment, not spell it out literally. my vocabulary is far too limited to actually be able to pull that off. The BG song went really quick because i didn't care what i wrote. i need to go at it like that in the future.

Yeah see I liked the vocals on that song, and I have no idea what you were even saying. Lyrics mean nothing! Even after mixing it, I have no idea. I don't focus on what's being said as much as how it's being said. You delivered it perfectly, so you coulda been singing in chinese and it wouldn't matter. I think of vocal delivery as just another instrument in the mix. Words don't matter, but the delivery has to be right.

Well, this is definitely interesting to see how everyone copes so differently with "writer's block", or whatever I should call it.

I find the space I'm in (physically, not mentally or emotionally) can really impact my ability to be creative. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm an extremely disorganized person. I blame it on my creative side. For the last year or so, I had all of my music equipment in my bedroom. This was a mistake. My bedroom is chaos. I wrote two songs that entire time, of which only one was worth keeping (and that one only resulted from an emotion I was going through).

I recently moved all my gear to the spare room in my house (I don't know why I didn't do this sooner). This space is kept so much neater than my room ever was. This has had a two-fold effect;

First, it makes me want to spend time in my writing space. As disorganized as I am, in my perfect world, it would be neat and clean. So, separating my music room from my bedroom has created a temporary "utopia" in my house. It's amazing how much more creative I feel when I'm in this environment. So, not only do I spend more time there, but the time I spend is so much more productive.

Try changing the space. Perhaps that will help? But also, like a lot of people here, I have also found the optimum time for my writing. Seems to be late at night for me, too. And write a lot! I end up hating most of the songs I write after a short period of time. But for every 10 bad ones, I get one that I am fond of. Write all the time. Even if it's a style that you don't normally do. It's good to stretch yourself.

i'm learning that. that song helped. i normally try to cram more words into a phrase than necessary. with that song i stretched the words out to fit the part.

When I was a little younger, weed put me in a "creative/inspired to write" zone 100% of the times I've smoked it.

I wouldn't recommend it health-wise, just sayin.........I saw it as a pole option and it's definitely had its effect in my past on writing.

just keep at it and inspiration will follow just distract yourself for parts of the day and get home and give it an hour or half an hour of writing.. Don't just stop, decrease a bit but always keep writing, you never know when you will stumble across a "hit", or when inspiration will suddenly start up again...

this is a great example of how delivery can affect the overall quality:

One life I'm gonna live it up
I'm takin' flight I said I'll never get enough
Stand tall I'm young and kinda proud
I'm on top as long as the music's loud

If you think I'll sit around as the world goes by
You're thinkin' like a fool cause it's a case of do or die
Out there is a fortune waitin' to be had
You think I'll let it go you're mad
You've got another thing comin'

That's right here's where the talkin' ends
Well listen this night there'll be some action spent
Drive hard I'm callin' all the shots
I got an ace card comin' down on the rocks

In this world we're livin' in we have our share of sorrow
Answer now is don't give in aim for a new tomorrow

Oh so hot no time to take a rest yeah
Act tough ain't room for second best
Real strong got me some security
Hey I'm a big smash I'm goin' for infinity yeah
