Writer/Producer Question

How do you run yo stuff do you lay down your beat and write a song to it or do you write lyrics to make a beat. I was just wondering how everyone does it.

everyone does it different..I know I have beats mad..and the artist come listen to them and whateva they like they write to it..or they might have something allready writtin that goes to the beat with a little changes to word play..or we create a beat together for that specific song..

I wouldn't say there is one strict way... For me it all depending on the artists.. I had some MCees that I trusted so much that I would just tell them come to the studio and we would crate songs on the spot with him/her just listening to the track in the studio and writing... Others I required them to get the beat upfront and memorize there lyrics to the point they don't need to read dem off of paper... So answer is it depends...

From a producers standpoint, I would say 85% of the time the track is made first, and then the vocals are made from the track...But sometimes you do have songwriters who don't have as much access to track so when I meet them they have all these songs with no track, melody and all......Which brings me to another question. For you producers who aslo do tracks outside of hip hop. If a songwriter comes to you with a song, and you build a track around it, do you include them in the production credits? As for me, I do.

yes and no...if they give alot of input in makin the track..then yes..but if it a track that fits..then no

but everthing is by a case bt case basis

so my answer is yes...

I meant if you create it right there, based off of what you hear when they sing their acapella song.

I won't unless they are giving me than just their performance.. I mean are u just giving credit for them inspiration ? They would need to give specifics about the production rather than just a performance...

They usually do. They have the melody, which is a big part of the song....Dawg!!! You are stiiiiiiingy

We used to make the beat and then have the artist write. But, now we make the beat and start writing at the same time. We get a vibe going... We find the production is better and the beat and lyrics fit with eachother more.

So an artist will say, "I want a beat that goes like this". He might have ideas for his lyrics, but vibes off of the beat while it's being produced...

I love it when that happens. You start feeding off of each others creative energy.

Lately Ive been doing a combination of the two.
Make the beat, write to it, after the writting is done, I go back and tweak the beat, add different stuff, take stuff out etc...
Works best in my case.
