Wow - just did my first vocal recording!

I tried recording my own songs...and i just realized that not only my voice sounds shitty...and I actually can't sing at all!! (I am the worst vocal i have ever heard!!! before I thought my singing is ok)

The song i wrote actually sound pretty nice on guitar and piano...but..argh...fuck my voice...


I come to this site mainly because I wanna see if there is any way(program/equipment) I can use to make my voice sound better...
anyway...anyone know how to edit your voice? what program/equpiment..??

I went to montreal for a few days & I come back & so much good feedback!

I recently got a singing teacher. Now that it looks like can finally get my song onto CD (had some tech troubles ) I plan to take a Karaoke version to her so we can work on it.

I'll also have a look at the books n stuff you reccomended.

(the worst things I'm suffering from right now are this Cnatural that I'm just not hitting - makes me squinch and my right eye close up when I hear it - and the warble when I have to hold out a note for a full measure. I though I was furthur along as a singer! Practice Practice Practice!)

Hehe... well, yes and no :D

He and I got involved in some pretty hot debates there. They were usually political or religious in nature.We were typically (not always) on the opposite side of a given issue. I actually respect him quite a lot even if I would get a little mad at him once in awhile (he's a better debator than I am...I guess you could say he's a masterdebator ;):D).

BTW - that's a behaviour I am trying to avoid here. I'm just staying the hell out of the political an religious threads in the cave. I am determined not to clutter up my experience here with all kinds of debate (even though it's hard for me to stay out of them:D).

I have some fairly strong views myself and have also stayed out of political/religious discussions here. I juat come here to learn...or rather to steal peoples ideas....not to get deep down and political. It's a very quick way of isolating yourself from certain people you can learn from.

I just listened to a few of my early vocal recordings...it was a good idea as it will stop me attempting to record my voicxe again any time soon. I will concentrate on what i'm good at...playing the bass.
 
...takes years to realize that my voice is "Oooh...So me". I always thought I don't have a gift to be a singer, but then again, I found nobody has such voice close to mine. Althought in bad way :D umh... But somehow I found my style and songs match to my character... So, just because I don't sound like anyone else, doesn't mean I'm bad... it's just different, but thank God I have different character. It's the true gift singer can get... Strong Character. Recognizeable... Whenever someone hear my recorded voice, they just know it was me... :) And it's good to know that !!!
Still I should get more practise... ;)

I listen to a lot of the postings to the MP3 clinic. I usually find that the ones I listen to more than once are the ones with the distinctively strange voices. Lt. Bob, for one. And some guy who posted a song with the file titled "Mute". He had a great distinctive voice, not fine or beautiful, but very interesting - told the tale very convincingly. I listened to that song over and over. It is the character of a voice that makes it great, not necessarily the musical correctness of it. Also, if you feel what you're singing, people can tell it. To me singing is not just about making notes come out, it's about spiritual transfer. It's bringing something unseen and unheard into the physical, sensual world. Hearing things from another dimension and then putting them into listenable form for this dimension.

He kept on singing despite the critics. (I'am a fan BTW)

Clock, less than 2% of the general public are "tone deaf".
The fact you heard some wanted improvements means there's
always hope. Using whatever you have will lead to much better
results than relying on exterior equipment. Not everyone has the
time and inclination to want to do this though.

I got a question....how come I don't know/dont' think my voice sounds like shit when i sing in karoke...?? But it sounds like shit during recording..??

Thats over 120,000,000 tone deaf people running around in the world... scary thought.


IMO: Most people have very good sounding voices when singing in pitches that are comfortable to them. Stay in tune, keep the beat, control the dynamics and say the words properly / clearly (optional in some genres) and you will sound ok.

I think its best if you treat the voice as you would any other instrument (but remember, you can’t replace the strings if you break them…) Most people suck when they first pick up an instrument, and most people start to sound good once they know a few cords and can keep a steady beat. The voice is pretty much the same…
 
Tone deaf = not being able to tell something is out of tune.

Some people have a hard time knowing if their voice is in tune when they are singing, even if they are not tone deaf. The voice can play tricks on you, since you’re a part of the instrument as much as you are a player of it. Fortunately a little practice is all it takes to sing in tune.
 
Clock, there can be a number of reasons why your voice seems different to you recorded versus live.

One is simply that we hear ourselves differently than others hear us, because in a sense, much of our sound is inside ourselves.
Another is when you're singing karaoke, there's crowd distractions and ambient noise.
We also have a certain sonic "identity" we've all carried over the years, and hearing yourself for the first time recorded can seem very strange as a result.

I always either wanted to sound like a dramatic baritone like Jim Morrison, Eric Burdon etc., or a ballsy tenor like Robert Plant or Paul Rodgers. So naturally I'm really a lyric baritone instead! :)
What we want to be and what nature decides for us can cause some conflict. And "nature" always wins in the end...
You just have to learn to accept what you've got,
and base your material accordingly.

I definately agree that it takes time to get used to your own voice...

Good posture is important, and often underrated. If you can get the air into your lungs, your voice will likely come through soon enough.

yo, lala

record a familiar song that you really like acapella or to it's original instrumental, and after some good singing lessons do this again and listen to the difference. go to the same studio if you can. if you are comfortable with the song and no it word for word, it shouldn't cost you more than an hour of studio time. going to a good studio will show more (pleasant) results than singing on a kareoke machine, or in the closet of an engineer who just learned what a mic pre and compressor is. btw, that engineer would be me;)


if you can avoid any pitch corrections, or anything else to digitally improve your voice. they can yeild amazing results when properly used but, you want to sound good at the b.e.t awards, or m.t.v unplugged when they have you sing live in acapella or acoustic. just my 2 cents.

That guy was awful. He was too young and also did not have enough time to train properly. It takes years to develop a voice that can truly handle opera.
And his teacher was too demanding. Singing is stressful enough without someone criticizing you every step of the way. IMO The best approach when training a young singer is to never say no and never be negative. Hell that’s the best approach when training any singer.

that is true, i haven't seen the episode. i have only seen the commercials for it. it's funny though, i posted to the thread and like 5min. later i hear that episode being announced to come on. it's on right now as i type. well, if anything she can see what is unacceptable in a singing coach.

thats true.... Give me a song in E and I'm fine, change that to C though and I'm screwed.


by the way, if anyone is interested, Sennheiser are doing a vocal coaching course on their site. I checked it out and its pretty good.
