Wow! I just played a G&L ASAT

I have to say I was very very impressed. I currently own a 5 y/o American Standard Tele and the ASAT kicks it's ass in every catagory. I'm not saying that the Fender is crappy by any means (I play it daily). But Wow! For only about $200 more you can own a Custom G&L ASAT! The build was more solid. And the tone!... The tone controls on my Tele' do virtually nothing to adjust the tone other than turn if off. The ASAT's volume and tone controls (when adjusted) offered a rainbow of sounds.

I'm going to do some rewiring on my current Tele' and see what I can do to improve it's sound (I'm open for wiring and pickup suggestions). If I'm not happy with the new pots and wiring that I'll be installing it's going up for sale and I'll be getting the G&L

Sorry for the rant. I just couldn't believe how nice this guitar sounded and felt.
 
I always thought G&Ls are what Fenders would have turned into if Leo had stayed. Great guitars, But I'm also glad regular old-style Fenders are made.
 
My G&L Tribute bass is the best I've had - prefer it even to the Rick. Superb build quality (it's Korean) and the electrics are exactly the same as the US made G&L's. Huge range of sounds.
 
i second your reaction. the first time i tried a ASAT i couldn't believe the clarity of it- ever since Teles seem so muddy to be, even with new strings. Clean, Clear, Poppy, the ASAT rules.

To be exact... this is the actual guitar for sale at Buffalo Bros that I played (among a couple of others there).

just a thought...

careful what you do to your guitar if you plan to sell it. you wouldn't believe it, but modifications, even if they make the guitar better, lower the value of it. my friend's dad had a completely modded g&l...like the ones you're talking about. it was an amazing guitar, but he had to sell it to pay for an emergency. he took off as much stuff as possible, but the value was still way lower than it should've been. :( just a thought...

I have a G & L F100 (the very first G & L model ever made) and played it for years without any modifications. After years of fighting 'squeal' from microphonic pickups, I finally replaced them with a set of Duncan's.

WOW! What a difference!

Now it not only plays like a dream, it sounds phenomenal!

I still have the original pickups, which could be put back if I ever decided to sell it, but I won't. I've had this guitar for 24 years and plan on passing it on to one of my sons.

The bottom line is, if you're a collector, don't change a thing on the guitar. If you're a player, make the guitar playable to your own personal taste.

It sounds like your friend's dad is a poor manager of money. Anyone who needs to sell a guitar because of an unforseen emergency sounds pretty irresponsible to me.
 
G&L guits are one of the industry's best bargains IMO.

Shit, I'd sell my kidney because of an unforseen emergency before I'd sell my guitar.

Wait a minute...selling a guitar to pay for something else is irresponsible? And that makes you a poor manager of money?

Buck is a man long on principles and short on bullshit. You may not always agree with his position, but you'll always know exactly where he stands on the issue at hand.
 
And apparently whatever other issues he feels like bringing up, as well.

It was a $30,000 dollar surgery. He's a working musician with a family. Yes, pickups are easy enough to change again. He had added a tremolo, which I think was the most hurtful to the value, since it couldn't be changed back. He isn't a guitar collector and he didn't want to sell it. It just had to happen. BTW, somebody bought the guitar at the music store he sold it at about two weeks later. Didn't last long...nice guitar.

I'm proud to say that he's still in the game. His new toy is one of those Fender Twin Custom 15 amps. Nice... :D
 
is the F100 worth some doh ?

hi guys and gals

I've got a G&L F-100 hanging on the wall here, and I sometimes pick it up to play some tunes. I bought it a few years ago from a friend who needed the cash real bad, and I had it for 500 $. Was that a good deal ? I suppose an axe like that will become more "wanted" as years go by ?

Now don't you ever use that against me !
 
Aly, if you ain't playin' it man, you're wastin' it. Play it or sell it back to him for $500 plus interest. Or lend it back to him. Guitar hanging on the wall for somebody who never plays it and only asks what it's worth - bad bad scene.
