We have a store called Surplus City. The have foam for sale that is 24" x 80" and 4" thick. One sheet is only $35 This shit is normally really expensive. I was wondering if this stuff would work as well as the Auralex type stuff? What is the purpose of the eggcrate, pyramid, and sawtooth patterns on the Aralex stuff. Surely it's not for diffusion is it? Would it make a difference that this stuff has a flat surface?

Unfortunately - it's a different foam to the auralex foam.!! Firstly it will burn with an acrid smoke that'll kill you. Acoustically it is entirely different.

sorry.;)

Actually Auralex foam is cut from a single square sheet where they use a flat blade to slice through the center using a cam to change the shape as it goes through, thus the surface effects.

cheers

Unless it's really dense foam it's not worth screwing with. Even if it is, fiberglass does a better job and is much cheaper. If you go for the 'glass be mindful of what you cover it with. Some fabrics are pretty reflective themselves.

It is very dense. That's why I thought it would work well. I figured it would burn like dead pine tree soaked in gas

LOL! It's not that it burns really intense so much as the fact that the combustion produces cyanide gas.

Cyanide shmyanide...

A little bit of poisonous gas in a small confined area never killed anybody ;)... :D

It's dangerous to put it on your walls but it's acceptable to put it in a couch?

Everybody who has answered here about the fire hazards are absolutely correct. Thee are many types of foams out there - soe are fire resistive some not. Unfortunately to make them fire resistive adds cost.

Roadkill posed the question why is it OK to have it in your seat cushion and not on the wall - simple answer is 1) on a seat cushion it is covered by material that usually has a low flame spread so it kind of portects the foam and 2) seat cushion foam does not burn very redily in a horizontal plane (such as when on a seat) but in a vertical plane it's flame spread is rapid and the products of combustion are as bad as they get.

I've got 28 years in the fire service and can attest by experience what this stuff can do when not used for it's intended application.

Stay safe!!!!!
