Hi guys,

I saw this video from one of my fav indi rappers, DFD
youtube.com/watch?v=Xn00FavrWB4&

and this and a few other videos inspired me to get back to recording.... (was my hobby back in HS/College)..

So after researching , I just got my blue yeti usb microphone, and set me up w/ Adobe Audition 3.. and no pop filter for now (gona go out and buy one).. this is pretty much my setup . and i do recording in my room.

I used to just contribute vocals to my crew back then, so im not really good at the technicalitlies of producing/mixing/recording ... but this time i dont wana have to rely upon others or a studio just to drop some random cuts.. and w/ near studio quality achievable in one's home nowadays, im really excited... but so im definitely a noob..

Anyway i did a few recordings, and though i can honestly say the Blue Yeti sounds much better than my old labtec PC microphone, it wasnt what i expected.. and i wanted to know HOW to make my recordings sound CRISP and sooo good quality like the one on DFD's video..

ofcourse right now im just playing w/ the gains and , well, my vocals are pretty much RAW as i really dont know how to do this.. im gona read up on some books but for now i just wanted

1) to know if it was possible to achieve near quality and clarity as the DFD video w/ the Yeti mic and Audition 3?
2) any quick tips and settings for me that i can try?

Really hope you guys can help a noob out real quick.. just so eager to record a good draft..

THanks guys

Hi. Blue have released a new version called Yeti pro which does 24bit/192Khz quality, if that's any use to you.

Hi Leanne
yeh i did notice that, but is that really a big difference? will the improved quality be very noticable? coz i see a lot of indi musicians on youtube using the Non pro version only and they're making really good music..

Post up a clip of your recordings so we can hear the difference.

If that guy's video is legit (and it looks to be), he's just using a heavily damaged mxl990.
Mics don't really come much cheaper and OK, we don't know his signal path, but either way you should be able to compete.

The thing is, no one can give you any tips without hearing you.

Your mic might suck, you could have a lisp, your room could sound terrible, your voice could have a really dull tone...
Any number of things could contribute before you even mention production techniques.
So let's hear ya and take it from there.
:)

Well, imo usb mics are good for getting some stuff down and recorded just for ideas and such, but you're most likely not gonna be able to get that quality and clarity from that video (even though it's a mxl 990..) out of a usb mic.

@steenamaroo
yeh you have a point mate, aite ill find time to do some samples for ya'l.. really glad to hear eagerness to help.. much appreciated...

...but is there like any usual settings you always go to like default tweaks to make quality better?

as for my voice, well yeh i dont like what i'm hearing from the recordings, but i've done studio recordings before and even when raw my voice was solid.. hence i was frustrated w/ the raw results of my current setup..

and w/ DFD's video there, from the sound of it, do you guys think it's tweaked/enhanced? or raw? i hear a bit of reverb there.. but im not an expert so dunno...

@guitaristic,
yeah i know that video was done in the studio but, i know other Blue Yeti users able to produce near studio quality.. just google youtube for blue yeti singing or blue yeti rap
here's one
youtube.com/results?search_type=search_videos&search_query=blue+yeti+singing&search_sort=relevance&search_category=0&page=

you'll see lots of good indi musicians producing really good sound using the yeti non pro..

There's no real 'go to' settings cos it's different for every setup.

The only thing that i'll almost aways do is roll off some of the bass, but even then you gotta listen first and see if it's necessary.
